Description: For an authentic taste of Scotlands islands and Highlands look no further than River House, a beautiful restaurant on the banks of the River Ness overlooking the Grieg Street bridge to the Free North Church. The restaurants spectacular views are complemented by the casual sophistication of the dining room, a comfortable and unpretentious space with timeless design and a warm, cosy atmosphere which invites you to relax and really enjoy your dinner. Dedicated to sourcing the best possible ingredients from the surrounding areas, the River House kitchen cooks each dish to order in the open plan kitchen, using fresh, seasonal produce prepared in such a way that individual flavours shine through. Though mainly Scottish in heritage the River Houses recipes also take inspiration from international cuisine with, in particular, a nod to French cookery woven in to many of the creative, modern dishes. Wines are carefully selected to complement the River House menu, providing a good, but not overwhelming, choice of labels.

“Keep Calm and Cook Mussels”
Reviewed April 17, 2014 via mobile

Wednesday night is Mussels Night at the River House. For £15 you get a choice of four different mussels served with skinny chips, bread and butter and either a glass of white wine or a bottle of local ale. For over a year I have been trying to get a free Wednesday evening as I love mussels. Having finally got a free evening imagine my disappointment when a power cut the plunged the restaurant into darkness. Alan, the owner chef, was completely unperturbed and after grabbing a couple of big candles from the tables for the kitchen it was business as usual. The waitress busied herself getting candles out for all the dinners and sautéed potatoes were offered instead of the skinny chips. The mussels were delicious (I chose the red Thai sauce and my husband the tomato and basil). If mussels aren't your thing the normal menu is also available. Mussel Wednesday didn't run in the height of the summer last year so get along now for this superb offer. I hope my Wednesday evening class is cancelled again soon!

Delightful meal. A la carte meals... absolutely devine. Scallops and mussels starters. Sea bass and halibut main meals. Power cut in between AND the chef did extremely well. Fabulous waitress. Pavlova dessert was ace. Definitely return.

“Excellent ”
Reviewed April 12, 2014 via mobile

After finding it hard to find a table in Inverness I took to tripadvisor to gain recommendation and was not disappointed. This small restaurant has only 11/12 tables which means you will receive a personal services.

I attended with my 4 year old daughter and noticing this the chef came out and proactively offered to make her something 'off menu', whatever she liked with no hassles. Having this as my first interaction with the staff was a very welcome surprise.

The menu is small but dishes had an excellent variety still and the food was unbelievable. As the kitchen is partially open plan to the diners it's great to hear and see the interaction between the 2 chefs and the 2 servers, all of whom obviously were enjoying their work which led to a great atmosphere.

Whilst eating all the other tables that had left the restaurant had stopped to compliment the chef on the quality of the food and service. Next time I find myself in Inverness I will be phoning far in advance to make sure I secure table.

“Above and beyond!”
Reviewed April 11, 2014

My family and I went to the River House to celebrate a run of birthdays and anniversaries. As the sole vegetarian, I was a little concerned as the menu displayed outside the restaurant (which I'd passed a number of times) did not have any vegetarian main options. My sister did check in advance and on the night, I was presented with a hand written vegetarian menu with 3 starter options and 3 main courses - I've never had that done for me before! The food was excellent (for the meat eaters too!) and the service was friendly and attentive. A lovely relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant - would definitely recommend - and I'm going back in a couple of weeks when I have friends visiting!

“Top class meal and service”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

Wonderful food and very friendly service. This is way above your general standard. Small menu but all cooked to order, lovely atmosphere. Don't miss this if you find yourself in Inverness. Although the place was full there was plenty of room to dine comfortably the staff were very relaxed whilst being attentive.
