Description: For an authentic taste of Scotlands islands and Highlands look no further than River House, a beautiful restaurant on the banks of the River Ness overlooking the Grieg Street bridge to the Free North Church. The restaurants spectacular views are complemented by the casual sophistication of the dining room, a comfortable and unpretentious space with timeless design and a warm, cosy atmosphere which invites you to relax and really enjoy your dinner. Dedicated to sourcing the best possible ingredients from the surrounding areas, the River House kitchen cooks each dish to order in the open plan kitchen, using fresh, seasonal produce prepared in such a way that individual flavours shine through. Though mainly Scottish in heritage the River Houses recipes also take inspiration from international cuisine with, in particular, a nod to French cookery woven in to many of the creative, modern dishes. Wines are carefully selected to complement the River House menu, providing a good, but not overwhelming, choice of labels.

“A meal not just for special occasions.”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

The quality of food and ambience make the River House one of those gems where quality and occasion are everything. You are made welcome and you know you are in for a culinary treat. Superb food, well balanced wines and amazing deserts.

But you know, the early evening option is a great option as the cost is less. That doesn't mean less service or quality, just you need to be out for evening service but don't worry as that does not make for a rushed meal.

Alfie and his team are a credit to standards in Inverness and he'll even help you out with recipes. Can't wait to get back!!

“Scotland's finest!”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

Our B+B recommended this restaurant and booked our table. Sooooo glad they did! Fantastic restaurant right on the river Ness. Small, intimate but tables aren't on top of each other. Stunning food - we had scallops and mussels (all local produce from Scotland, Hebrides and Shetland from memory) followed by a steak and another fish dish. Oodles of very fresh bread, the best Provence Rose wine at a sensible price followed by a cheese platter to suit every cheesy taste. Friendly, efficient, relaxed service that's not intrusive. Alfie is a real character and tries to greet everyone personally. Nice touch and made us feel very welcome. Do not eat anywhere else in Inverness; THIS IS IT!

“Really very good”
Reviewed June 3, 2013 via mobile

We found this place from a recommendation by our cab driver. The food and service was excellent, especially the pickled herring which was nothing like the usual rollmops and their ilk. Delicious

This simply has to be the best restaurant in Inverness. Fine dining in a cozy atmosphere, just cannot be beat! Presentation and taste are what it's all about in this house of Alfie. Very nice selection on the menu, super wine list, outstanding service. River House is the place to go for an unforgettable dining experience.
