My husband had visited this hotel with friends and liked it so much, he wanted us to visit together. He was particularly impressed by the wonderful lounge and bar areas, the comfortable bedrooms, and the lovely views, and having heard his comments and viewed others on this website, I was keen to see the hotel also.
However, it is currently being 'refurbished', and this has had a major impact on the ambience of the hotel. The first room we were given (104) had several workmen working on the flat roof of the lounge - about two feet from our window. We complained and, having been shown other rooms, we settled on Room 209 as it was on the other side of the building. However we discovered the next morning that this side of the building has work going on too, and were awakened each morning at about 8 by the noise of the JCB and other machinery moving back and forwards under our window. The room was just as described, and absolutely beautiful, but we did not find it a relaxing place to be.
Public areas have also been affected - the main lounge and bar are closed for refurbishment. There is a makeshift bar set up in the area to the left of reception, and bar meals are served in that area. We ate breakfast in the restaurant - if we ate at the window side, we had a perfect view of the workmen putting up scaffolding on the wall next to us, and if we ate in the inner area it was to the banging and drilling from the lounge area next door. The lounge area at reception also suffered from noise, and workmen trailing through the reception to get to their workplace, and the garden area is cordoned off in places to accommodate workmen and equipment. (presumably this will affect the garden rooms also).
It's a lovely hotel, and presumably will be even more beautiful when completed. I do understand that improvement has to take place and that some inconvenience can be expected. What I find unacceptable is that we were not told of this (we would have changed our dates if we had known), and there is no mention of it, even in the 'refurbishment' section on the hotel's website.
Strangely, I would go back. I could see that the hotel has the potential to be excellent, and clearly I did not see it at its best. However, I will not return without finding out specifically what is happening witht he refurbishment and asking for a room as far away from it as possible.
