“Lovely Hotel....BUT beware of renovation work”
Reviewed February 19, 2009

My husband had visited this hotel with friends and liked it so much, he wanted us to visit together. He was particularly impressed by the wonderful lounge and bar areas, the comfortable bedrooms, and the lovely views, and having heard his comments and viewed others on this website, I was keen to see the hotel also.

However, it is currently being 'refurbished', and this has had a major impact on the ambience of the hotel. The first room we were given (104) had several workmen working on the flat roof of the lounge - about two feet from our window. We complained and, having been shown other rooms, we settled on Room 209 as it was on the other side of the building. However we discovered the next morning that this side of the building has work going on too, and were awakened each morning at about 8 by the noise of the JCB and other machinery moving back and forwards under our window. The room was just as described, and absolutely beautiful, but we did not find it a relaxing place to be.

Public areas have also been affected - the main lounge and bar are closed for refurbishment. There is a makeshift bar set up in the area to the left of reception, and bar meals are served in that area. We ate breakfast in the restaurant - if we ate at the window side, we had a perfect view of the workmen putting up scaffolding on the wall next to us, and if we ate in the inner area it was to the banging and drilling from the lounge area next door. The lounge area at reception also suffered from noise, and workmen trailing through the reception to get to their workplace, and the garden area is cordoned off in places to accommodate workmen and equipment. (presumably this will affect the garden rooms also).
It's a lovely hotel, and presumably will be even more beautiful when completed. I do understand that improvement has to take place and that some inconvenience can be expected. What I find unacceptable is that we were not told of this (we would have changed our dates if we had known), and there is no mention of it, even in the 'refurbishment' section on the hotel's website.
Strangely, I would go back. I could see that the hotel has the potential to be excellent, and clearly I did not see it at its best. However, I will not return without finding out specifically what is happening witht he refurbishment and asking for a room as far away from it as possible.

Thank you for your comments, regarding your stay at the hotel in February 2009.
I always appreciate all feedback.

I apologise it has taken me some time to submit a reply to your comments.

The refurbishment was part of a programme to improve the overall standard of the hotel and we do endeavour to give the best service while this is happening.
The good news is that, from 6th March, the Lounge, Bar and Conservatory refurbishment have now been completed and the hotel is back to its peaceful and tranquil environment.
I will be posting some photos of the newly refurbished areas on here for all to see.
Please contact me at the hotel directly where I will be happy to discuss your comments in more detail.

Thank you once again for taking the time to write and I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel hopefully in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Craig Ewan

We chose this property for two reasons: - it's position in the highlands, and it's reviews on Trip Advisor. I've stayed in the Inverness area twice before in a bed and breakfast but as I was with other travelers this time, I chose the hotel route and was not disappointed. As with most hotels in the highlands, this is not a new construction by any means, but is clean, comfortable and very well managed. The staff is friendly, the service is top notch and it is just on the edge of Inverness for convenience. We stayed in a second floor suite and enjoyed a golf view from our balcony. The food in the bright clean restaurant is ..... on a par with most Scottish eating places. If you've been there before, you know what that means. By all means choose this hotel if you are staying in the highlands and want a home base for day trips. You will be glad you did.

It was late and we stumbled into this hotel by going down the wrong street. This used to be a Marriott but was bought by private businessman. While we had no reservations, reception was very gracious and treated us like a 5 star hotel. They even wanted to show us 2 rooms to choose from. The rooms were clean and bathrooms spacious. The beds were very comfortable and we got a great night sleep. The included breakfast the next morning was fantastic and met all our expectations of an English style breakfast. Unfortunately we only could stay one night, but wanted to stay longer. This was a nice hidden gem that we were lucky to find in the dark while driving.

We enjoyed our stay at the Kingsmill. Whilst there was a minor hiccup at the start (we got a smoking room) the staff were extremely helpful in response and even upgraded us. The rooms were a little dated but nice and big. The bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was ok, although the fried eggs were a little too fried for me and the scambled eggs did not look to appetising. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the town, so if you like a brisk (i.e. cold) walk in the winter you will be ok. Overall though, for the price the Hotel was a good choice and I would stay there again.

Brilliant Hotel,

Arrived at this hotel for a 2 night stay with partner, the room was very spacious and the bed very comfortable, the leisure centre pool was excellent with steam room, sauna and spa pool. The staff were friendly, polite, very helpful and are a asset to the management of the hotel.

One negative comment would be that our toilet in bathroom was directly in front of a window that overlooked car park, would have felt a bit more privacy if it had a roller blind instead of net screens.

My husband and I were visiting Inverness for the weekend. This is the first time we have stayed in the Kingsmills hotel but it certainly wont be the last. The hotel is about a 10 to15 minute walk to the centre of the town depending on how energetic you are feeling. The hotel itself is lovely as was our spacious bedroom which was spotlessly clean. My husband and I made full use of the leisure facilities both days and at one point had sole use. Any staff we came in contact with were very courteous, pleasant & efficient. Breakfast was very good with plenty of buffet choices. We ate in the hotel on Sunday night and again the food was very good. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Visitng Inverness on business we have just spent two nights at the Kingsmills Hotel . This was our second visit to the hotel - the first one was OK, but the second one was highly worth praise. Our room was very comfy and well equipped. The real surprise was the updated menu. First visit the menu was a bit dated - more like pub grub of 10 years ago. This time we were treated to some very beautifully presented dishes that were up to date with modern dining. Staff were all pleasant, friendly and helpful. All in all a great expereince - we will return!
