We are having an extended holiday with our preschooler and I am writing about the accommodation we liked the most. Those not mentioned were not bad, just not memorable. Needless to say, this holiday entails early wake ups, busy days, early dinner and no night life.

We stayed two nights in this beautiful historic house, offering a luxury experience in extensive grounds, with an enormous walled garden and a short drive to the site of the battle of Culloden and to Inverness. The staff were so welcoming, friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, including carrying our extensive luggage up multiple flights of stairs and doing so with humour and grace. The house does not have an elevator and we were on the top floor.

Our en-suite room was well appointed, elegant and comfortable. The house is furnished with antiques and rich in history. It is a place where you simply wish to linger, in the lounge, or bar or wandering the grounds. Their range of whiskey and Scottish gins is impressive by any measure.

Preparing for dinner we could here a piper in the distance, walking the grounds. The restaurant is outstanding, elegant in both design and cuisine. We dined in both nights and enjoyed an extensive breakfast menu. The food is simply delicious.

The staff are brilliant. Some have been with the hotel a long time and have a deep knowledge of the house and area. What surprised us the most was how skilled and easily they interacted with our four year old. They made us feel wonderfully welcome and comfortable.

The only down side was that of most heritage buildings, no air-conditioning in a room at the top of the house in an unseasonably hot July. This not withstanding, we would stay here again at the first opportunity - even in a hot July.

Thank you for a truly memorable stay.

WOW.....that says it all. Great and accommodating staff; beautiful rooms and grounds; great rest food. Upscale but worth it.....Nick was our man doing everything from taking us to our room to assisting serving dinner to recommending scotch before and after dinner!!

An alternative to mainstream hotels and a faster pace city experience, Culloden House offers the expanse of a rolling countryside setting replete with pond, large gated garden, croquet and tennis courts. In addition to a more private accommodations at a carriage house, the main house offers several distinctive rooms with decor reminiscent of the early 1900s. This theme is carried out in the large sitting area leading to the dining room as well as the smaller bar. While quaint, some updating or restoration does appear to be called for to maintain the higher standards one would associate with a property of this sort. The step in an odd place in our otherwise large en suite bathroom required constant mindfulness along with placement of a lamp at night to prevent any missteps - a nightlight would be a helpful addition.

The staff helped to make our stay enjoyable, pleasant and memorable and both the food selections and service were quite good. The aim of our stay was to combine sightseeing of the Scottish Highlands along with relaxation- to that end, our goal was accomplished.

Room tip: No higher than second floor if any mobility or health concerns

Well I have to agree wholeheartedly with K6538LEdavidt. Not much to add although I want to stress the friendliness, helpfulness and good service we received from the staff. But did have to search someone down on occasion for a drink at the bar. It is not their fault the interior has been neglected to say the least. When you pay that much for a night's lodging more is expected. Some examples, had to run water a long time to get it hot enough for the bath, one sink drained very slowly, the mattress felt like it might have been from the 1700's, the toilet seat was missing a screw and slipped around side to side and a portion drapes were severely bleached out from the sun in the room. Understandably the maintenance costs for venues such as these are very high (nobility had the wealth) but more funds need to be put back into the Manor. Magnificent exterior but quite a letdown inside. If you want accommodations in an absolutely beautiful hotel stop over at the Prestonfield House in Edinburgh. Over the top in furnishings, grounds and service. Elegant to be sure. Even a bottle of champagne waiting for you upon arrival.

We throughly enjoyed our quick stay at this historical property. The staff we very friendly and helpful (especially Collin and Stephen). The room was spacious and had great views of the property and environs. Our dinner and breakfast were delicious. But the highlight was discovering the walled garden. It was like being taken back in time.
