“Tea at Culloden House”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

Our Historical Romance Novel themed UK Holiday included a drive by Culloden House. Being nurses from Texas and knowing the class of clientele the Culloden House sometimes caters to, we were a bit apprehensive to ask if we might have Tea and a look at Diana Gabaldon’s bench. With a tentative knock at the front door, we were cordially welcomed by friendly staff to enjoy tea and sandwiches in the parlor. After which, we were invited to walk the garden to find Gabaldon’s bench. We are so glad we stopped by. The building holds such historical significance to the area. Sitting in the Parlor, serving tea to my friend, I could just imagine myself as the heroine of a Romance Novel. What a wonderful ending to our Vacation. I want to send a big Texas thank you to Culloden House.

Ladies, the pleasure was all ours! Delighted that you managed to find the spiritual home of the "Outlander" series and that we showed you both some Highland hospitality.

A fantastic photograph of Kyle our porter! Thank you for posting and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

My nephew and his wife gave me a gift voucher for afternoon tea at Culloden House for my birthday last year.

I visited recently and enjoyed the most relaxing afternoon tea you could wish for. The surroundings were beautiful, the sandwiches, cakes etc were superb and all this made for a really enjoyable afternoon with a friend.

Would thoroughly recommend afternoon tea for a gift - birthday, wedding anniversary (particularly Ruby or Golden).

Thanks to the staff for their attention to detail and making this a very special birthday gift.

What a beautiful hotel with a great selection of room types. I had a room facing the fields in the back and every morning as i looked out the window the Highland cows were happily grazing. The staff is wonderful and Stephen, the Manager, can arrange any type of activity that you desire - whiskey tasting, cashmere shopping, touring Culloden Battlefield, etc. Excellent food and very special shortbread cookies are served with afternoon tea - ask the staff who has been the lucky recipient of this treat!

This place has a lot of history. Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here before the Battle of Culloden. Today it wears that history well, with its fantastic, grand exterior, elegantly traditional rooms and romantic gardens. The first time I stayed I felt like a Princess as I was lucky enough to get a room with a four poster bed and a view over the huge entrance lawn and drive. This second time no four poster (best to ask if you want one) but still a very nice, large room with a view of some Highland cows in a field to the rear of the hotel! The food is a real highlight too - dinner was divine (particularly the beetroot risotto) and the main dining room was opulent and romantic (and quiet as some larger parties that were staying were dining in separate rooms). Breakfast was great too. The bar was very well stocked with whisky. It's also well placed, by car anyway, for visiting Inverness and the area - Culloden, Fort George, golfing at Castle Stuart etc. Highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a four poster bed

Delighted you enjoyed your return visit with us, I have to admit to being a fan of the Beetroot Risotto as well, unfortunately as we enter the Summer it is about to disappear from the menu as Chef makes a point of using seasonal produce.

The beauty of Culloden is the fact that we also ensure the peoples dining experience isnt over run by any large groups who are staying, we appreciate that you want to relax and enjoy your dinner and for that reason we ensure that any groups or larger parties are accommodated in one of our two private dining rooms.

Hope to welcome you back and let us know when your next coming and we will arrange a four poster for you.

Kind regards,

Stephen Davies, General Manager

I had organised a "Whisky Trip" for a group of doctors and had chosen Culloden House because I wanted a "country hotel"... Well I could not have chosen better!!! From the moment we arrived the friendliness and efficiency of the staff shone through...Nothing was too much trouble...It is a shame I can not give 6 stars in the rating! On the advice of the hotel I arranged a "performance" before dinner of "Battlescar" which was an act that brought to life the Jacobite experience.....Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at Culloden House before the ill-fated battle.... The hotel took care of everything and provided a magnificent room for the entertainment and dinner...
The bar area had a great selection of whiskies and we sampled a fair few...... The rooms were period and traditional in nature befitting the hotel....so no minimalist business hotel here....... Breakfast is served to you in the magnificent dining room....... (no buffet....nice for a change!)
The staff recommended and took care of booking a local tavern for lunch.... Cawdor tavern.... well worth a visit especially if you like "real ales".....
I sarted and will finish with Tina Turner's signature record ..... SIMPLY THE BEST !!!

Room Tip: if you want space, avoid a single as I did ,and pay for a double.....

We just returned from our Spring Break trip, originating in Atlanta Ga and headed for Inverness Scotland. We were warned by all of our friends that traveling to part of the world in the first week of April was sheer madness. That was not important to us, our goal was to experience a far off land, with very few tourists, and to relax in a picturesque setting. We were rewarded with 4 days of crystal clear sunshine and cool temperatures - every bend in the road was a post card.

We flew into London on a Saturday morning, stayed 1 night in London (Marriott Park Lane - wonderful location and service)...then we took the Caledonian Sleeper train from London to Inverness. The train departs London at 8pm and arrives in Inverness at 8am. You have not lived until you have slept the night away on a night train in a surprisingly comfortable bed!

We then checked into this wonderful Scottish manor house called the Culloden House. It is just what you imagine that it would be, built a few hundred years ago and sits on beautiful grounds. The rooms were unique, cozy, and very Scottish Highland. The bar and restaurant were a nice place to unwind at the end of a day of sight seeing. (The bar was stocked with every type of Scotch that is distilled within the country!)

But I save the best for last. The service was incredible. The General Manager Steven made us feel as if we were staying at Downton Abbey...except everyone had a great sense of humor. We also had great fun at night in the lounge (by a roaring fire) with our fine footman, Noel...who was a complete hoot.

Luxury, history, and that wonderful Scottish sense of fun. We WILL go back to the Culloden House.

Sadly, after our four days of heaven at Culloden (and driving a rental car on the wrong side of the road!), we departed and headed back to the train station to catch the Caledonian Sleeper back to London, and back to the US.

The trip was absolutely perfect, and it was sad to leave such a lovely place and lovely people.

Culloden House made it all work perfectly!

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We were delighted that you chose the Highlands for your Spring break, the weather was fantastic which always helps the natural beauty of the local area.

Culloden excels because of its genuine, hard working team and we are delighted that we exceeded that expectation.

We hope to welcome you back in the future and Ill pass on your kind comments to all the team and especially Noel!

Stayed at Culloden House Hotel for 2 nights which was booked for me as a surprise gift. It included breakfast as well. From the minute we drove up towards the hotel we had the Wow factor. The outside of the hotel looks awesome and the grounds are beautiful. Even the ducks walking across the grass made me smile.
The staff were very attentive, carrying our bags to our very spacious room. Even though the room was a Classic Room - which is one of their basic rooms - it was very big and contained a king size bed, 32 inch tv, trouser press, free wifi and the en suite had a bath with a shower over head.
No tea/coffee making facilities however, all we had to do was dial reception and within minutes they brought it straight to your room. And, according to my partner, the tea was the best tea he had ever drank!
Back to the staff - very friendly, couldn't do enough for you and offered you advice on places to eat etc.
The breakfast was out of this world. The black pudding is certainly the best I have ever tasted! And its all served to you - you do not have to get out of your seat!
The only reason I have marked 4 out of 5 is because the tiles in the bathroom had signs of mould, albeit slight, and there was a few parts of the wallpaper peeling in places. The toilet also required a bit of manual adjustment after flushing to assist the water to refill or the noise lasted for a good while. But all in all I would definitely return to this hotel in future.

I doubt there is a more splendid sense of arrival when staying at a Country House in Scotland!

Our Chef does source the best local ingredients and I agree that the Black Pudding is out of this World.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding your stay and the team. We have actioned the points you raised and look forward to welcoming you back to hopefully a 5 star review!
