“Excellent Old Fashioned Scottish Hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from a two night stay at this fabulous old style hotel. We had booked with a Groupon Voucher but upgraded to an executive room for £25 extra per night. Well worth the extra cost! We were accommodated in room 215 which was huge with a super king size bed. An archway led to the dressing area and e suite which was also large. The room and en suite were immaculate. The curtains and upholstery on the chairs were beautiful, rich and heavy. Large flat screen TV but not very good reception! Housekeeping on second day was to a high standard with hospitality tray replenished and all towels fresh. The shower was very powerful and water temperature just right. Only complaint was the fact that the extractor fan did not work but cards were provided to report any problems, which I appreciated. Breakfast was all self service which was disappointing as choice of egg was scrambled (more like chopped up omelette) or fried, no boiled or poached option. Lots of staff around but only clearing tables., would have appreciated some level of service (even Premier Inn restaurants offer to make eggs to order) especially do not expect to use a machine for hot drinks like a motorway service station! Dining is in the Ash attached to the hotel. Quality of food is very good but would advise others to have the early dining option prior to 6.30pm rather than using the 20% off voucher as it is much cheaper and virtually the same menu. The voucher for a half price second drink is useless if you do not drink alcohol as coffee is counted as one drink although for two, served in one coffee jug but charged for two! Our Groupon deal included a free bottle of wine if we had the later dinner which we did on the first night! Loved the Scottish themed decor in the public areas. Lovely paintings on the walls, wing armchairs and the most wonderful staircase. Do not understand why there are so many negative comments about the decor in the public areas. They are full of character and just what I expect in a highland hotel! Hope to return some day

Stayed two nights in this Hotel. Single I was an individual, I was allocated a very small room that I could not even move around. The room was cold with no radiator working. There was an electric heater so close to the bed that it was dangerous to turn on. The window in my room was almost rotten, with a huge draft. The bathroom was amazingly very big and new and was very nice. The food was very average for dinner and so was the breakfast. The staff were all very friendly and welcome, so this made a big difference. The location is excellent, so close to everything. This hotel is due a huge upgrade.

Thanks for the review. It is indeed a challenge to maintain not only a Hotel but a Historical Building of the Highlands - you would be happy to note that the entire public areas including the Lobby, Art Gallery Cafe and bot the Grand Wallace Ballroom and the Magnus Function Rooms gave been totally renovated. We carry out a continuous maintenance programme and the result of which can be seen in the other reviews stating about the quality of the rooms etc. While we have noted the point raised about the heater which we shall definitely look into, but had that been pointed out during your stay, our maintenance team would have happily attended to that. However, we apologise for this and we would definitely look forward to welcome you again.

managed to get a dinner, bed and breakfast deal and it was the best.always have breakfast anyway when visiting.had a 3 course meal in ash restaurant and it was delicious.staff were very attentitive and were always checking to see if everything was ok.
stay at the royal highland quite often, the staff are always cheery and helpful.getting a bit worn and an update wouldn"t go amiss but have stayed in worse and love the old character of the hotel plus it"s slap bang in the middle of town right at the train station.
always look forward to my visits here

Went here for a weekend break. Booked a double room but when we arrived discovered we had been given a twin! Raised this to reception but unfortunately they were fully booked so compensated us with a voucher for 2 courses in the resturant.

Foyer of hotel is lovel but the rooms are a bit dated and could do with a coat of paint. But the shower in the bathroom was great!

The hotel is perfectly located for the train station, shops and bars.

When we won rail travel tickets in a Visit Scotland competition we decided to travel to Inverness as it had been some time since our last visit. When deciding where to stay we chose The Royal Highland Hotel simply because it was just out of the railway station door. We arrived 12.16 pm and went into the hotel to see if it was possible to leave our luggage we were shown to the Porters Lodge where we could leave our luggage until 15.00hr check in.
We received the key for room 203 and we could not have asked for a better room. There were 2 double beds plenty chairs which makes a change a flat screen TV, plenty tea / coffee, flavoured tea, hot chocolate and 1 bottle each of still and sparkling water. The furniture is in keeping with the style of the old building. We had booked dinner, bed & breakfast and can only praise the waiting staff in the breakfast room. They were very attentive and cleared away your dishes whenever you put them to the side and checked on the buffet each time one of them went past and always kept it well topped up. We went down for breakfast at various time during our stay and always had hot food apart from the porridge. Our three dinners
were taken in the Ash restaurant again we had no problem with the staff they too were very attentive. The food was well presented and plenty of it I could have eaten the steak pie each night, it was to die for. The choice of wine was Ok at £16.75 for a bottle of house wine. The Ash restaurant was busy with diners from out with the hotel which says a lot for Ash.
Our only complaint was being greeted with a "Hi Yi" when a simple Good Evening would have been better. This did not spoil an excellent stay at The Royal Highland Hotel. We will be back.

This elegant old hotel is now showing it's age. Having previously stayed here, twice before on the first floor, we were surprised when given a room on the second floor to discover the run-down appearance of the rooms at this level. The bathroom was showing very poorly fitted plumbing with taps loose and wrongly fitted, grouting discolouring and overall cleanliness not up to standard. The paint was flaking off the windows and the radiator had rust brown water stains. It was a pity as we had got a great deal through E Bay short breaks and the breakfast buffet offered an excellent choice,

Room Tip: Try for a First Floor room as the are in better condition.

Rooms were spacious. Bed was comfortable. Shower was amazing. You can't beat the location. It's in the center of everything and attached to the train station. Only complaint was the wifi was slow, unreliable and restricted to the libby. Would definitely recommend it.
