“Same excellent experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

Before making our annual visit to Inverness, I checked TripAdvisor to see if River Cafe and Restaurant was still operating. It is. A reviewer mentioned that it is under new ownership. So it is but it still operates under the belief system that good food and good service is what makes a restaurant. I booked a table after asking if we would be able to bring a wheel chair inside. On the night, we were met at the door and assured everything was set, and so it was. My wife, my three year old Granddaughter, Great Grandma and me were warmly welcomed. My wife and I found River many years ago and make it a point to have at least one dinner there. Our Granddaughter can be a fussy eater but that did not present a problem for the staff. They went well beyond what is expected to ensure we all had an enjoyable dinner. All of our selections were very good choices. The service was wonderful and I had a chance to talk to our waitress who is related to the new owner. There is no need to worry that this is not the same fine restaurant that it has always been for us. We will of course go back next year when we visit. The atmosphere is relaxing, the food is very good and the service even better. It is not a large place and that is fine with me. It is a busy establishment without being noisy or pushing to get the next customers in. Do yourself a favour and dine there. Located on the river, it left time for us walk along and enjoy the scenery after dinner, all of which added to the positive experience of going to the River Cafe. A yardstick I employ is ask myself if I would go back. There is no question there. The answer is a resounding yes.

“An urgently needed addition to fine dining in Inverness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

Tried this out for a social evening with brother and father and had got fed up of the usual dodgy curry houses. What a great find. Higher end dining is hard to find in Inverness but the River Restaurant is way up there with the best. Small, intimate and cosy, great riverside view, unpretentious and with professional but unfussy service. The food was simply superb. Between us we had venison, steak and lamb, none of us could fault anything. It is higher end cost wise for the town but when you taste the plate of food you get you'll realise what great value you're getting.

So pleased to have found this gem and hopefully it will force up standards in a town with otherwise plenty of mediocre dining experiences to be had.

“What a find!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

This was a return visit to Inverness after 2 years & we were very sadly disappointed by the restaurant at the hotel which on our first visit was superb. Howe ever on the third night of our visit we came across this 'jewel in the Highlands' of a restaurant & ate there on two consecutive evenings before returning home. The staff were attentive but unobtrusive, the menu was varied with a wide selection of discerning Scottish fare which was beautifully cooked & presented. The wines were pleasant & very reasonably priced & we found the whole dining experience a joy to behold. Until this find it was unlikely we would return to Inverness - this is now our reason for another visit!!

“Gluten free options”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

I was searching for a restaurant that offered gluten free options and couldn't find one in Inverness. After reading some reviews about The River Cafe and Restaurant I took a chance and went to check it out. Low and behold not only did they offer gluten free dishes but they could also alter some (not all) of their other dishes to make it gluten free. The restaurant is very accommodating and very much aware of your dietary needs. I had the monk fish (one of their gluten free main dishes) and it was absolutely delicious and their cream of mushroom soup (yes gluten free also). So for anyone visiting Inverness and is gluten intolerant you need to come and visit. Great place, great food and a great staff.

“To be recommended”

A group of 11 of us had a really good experience for supper.
Fresh local food cooked by the chef /owner. The place is small, friendly staff, a short wine list and delicious food.
