“A travellers dichotomy!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2013

As you arrive at the Norseman, gut instinct is to turn around and go. Flaking paint, dirty windows, look of a working mans club really puts you off. However, Once inside, pleasant staff ease the anxiety! I was given keys to room 314.......a real disappointment! The carpet was bare (cord showing), curtain hanging off, window dirty etc.... But the room was really clean.
Went down for dinner... Bar very reasonable indeed (working men's club prices!), one look at the menu and..... disappointed, seemed like a very ordinary pub menu. Fish and chips, curry, pie, salad, steak all seemed very plain. When the food arrive it was really good, a little imagination from the author of the menu would have helped.
During the night, every bed in the hotel creaked and boy racers tore up the car park over the road (admit not the hotels fault), but the bed was really comfortable and after 12.00, when the checkered flag had gone down, I slept like I was dead!
Breakfast was Excellent. I have travelled all over the UK on business but this has to be the best. Beats the 'Holiday Inn' type establishments into a cocked hat. Cooked buffet really good (especially the fresh fried eggs), but the fruit was unbeatable.. All fresh.. Mango, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries.. Really good.
All in all, the value and quality of the food made this an enjoyable stay. I just wish the town of Wick was having a better time... shops boarded, yobs roaring around in souped Corsas , derelict buildings etc but then, stand on the bridge and watch the Sea otters. Where else could you do that.

This stay was truly a dichotomy....

Room Tip: Don't face the Poundstretcher car park.

Dear Paul 105105,

Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to the Norseman Hotel. Apologies that your first impressions didnt make you want to stay. We have just landscaped our garden to the rear and it has enhanced our guests experience but appreciate your feedback on the front of the hotel. Unfortunately it is not something we can fix quickly but it is on our radar.

Your kind words regarding the staff and the food is very much appreciated, we work hard to keep our breakfast a positive lasting memory for our guests and if that is coupled with a great nights sleep and a good view of the otters then we are delighted so thanks for sharing them with us,

kind regards
Andrew

Middle 3 nights of an 11-night tour of Scotland. The hotel is centrally located in Wick, and its interior is much nicer than one might expect from its rather stark exterior! The room was comfortable, the service friendly, the breakfast excellent. Dinner was good and the servings copious! I would have not hesitation in returning to the Norseman!

Located in the sleepy – and rather tired looking – town of Wick, the Norseman Hotel is, at least, well located in the centre. The town’s culinary highlight according to locals is Wetherspoon although the Norseman’s breakfast offering was really good.

Arriving at the hotel, negotiating past piles of laundry and staff painting walls in the corridor, I found my room to be clean and adequate despite the lingering smell of paint. Propping the window open with one of the bottles of shower gel provided sufficient ventilation.

Be sure to request a room facing the large Poundstretcher car park (and river beyond) as the local entertainment commences around 7pm. For three hours, Scottish boy-racers arrive in lowered Renault Clios and Vauxhall Corsas. While Scotland doesn’t boast the same motoring heritage as England with Silverstone and Brands Hatch, Poundstretcher’s car park nightly features burning rubber and revving (1.1 litre) engines as local scallies drive a circuit around Wick.

The hotel itself is okay. The television works, the bed has clean linen, the shower works, you pay your money and rest your head.

Buses stop right outside the hotel but sadly they don’t go anywhere you might want to go when you want to go there. The bus to John O’Groats arrives at the ferry terminal a few minutes after the ferry departs, so I opted for a pricey taxi to start an amazing day trip to Orkney.

The train station, though, is just five to ten minutes’ walk away and the journey down through Scotland is absolutely stunning.

The Norseman is a good location for folks exploring the tippy-top of Scotland and beyond to the Orkneys. I reckon a car would be pretty much essential to make the most out of the surrounding area and coast which was indeed beautiful.

Dear Cheebs,

thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us, we are delighted you enjoyed your visit to Wick. Please accept our apologies that the smell of paint affected your first impressions, we are continually trying to improve the decor of the hotel but try and keep it to when the areas are not used to their maximum to lessen any inconvenience.

We are sorry that the boyracers was a distratcion for you but appreciate your lighthearted take on their activities. Things have improved significantly since we took over and started to work with the local constabulary and council in trying to eradicate the blight of this for Wick but sorry for the poor impresson it gave you.

Thanks again and hope to welcome you back in the near future,

Andrew Mackay

Excellent central location in Wick, with nice Riverside views. The Hotel was busy with both foreign visitors and business people. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and efficient. The room was nice with a TV and coffee making facilities. Breakfast was good, with a nice selection of fresh produce.

Really good little hotel, very comfortable and clean. Sleep was slightly spoilt by the boy racer team that meets in the adjacent car park about 50m from the hotel bedrooms. The revving and tooting carries on until approx 2300.

The food served is lovely, and the breakfast selection and quality was a pleasant surprise.

Room Tip: Not the first floor, you need the curtains closed at all times!

Dear Simonjune,

thankyou for your lovely comments regarding our hotel and your experience when staying here. We do appreciate you taking the time to pass them onto us. We are working hard with the local council and constabularly to remove the boy racers challenge we have here in Wick. By working together we have reduced it considerably and although we will continue this hard work we are sorry it impacted on your visit to Wick.

Thanks once again
Kind regards

We have been travelling through Britain for 8 weeks and the staff at the Norseman were the most friendly, patient and helpful of any we have met. We are from Australia and I will be happy to tell my friends about our great stay.
