“Warm welcome at Mackays”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013 via mobile

Stayed here for two nights recently. As we arrived before book in time, staff showed us to the bar for a much appreciated coffee. Room was lovely and our dinners in No. 1 restaurant were delicious. Staff at breakfast were warm and efficient. Would definitely recommend Mackays.

A spotless hotel, run with such attention to detail. My room was very comfortable overlooking the river. My meal was absolutely delicious, the baked hake with samphire, was really to die for, it couldn't have been fresher. Breakfast was executed to the same high standard, and all cooked to order. I can thoroughly recommend Mackays Hotel.

Room Tip: I could only honestly comment on the room I used.

We recently had a night's stay at this very nice hotel in Wick. We were in a lovely recently redone room. Very comfortable bed, great bathroom, and a view of the Wick river from our window. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I will write a separate review of the excellent restaurant, Number 1 Bistro, but the breakfast served in the dining room was delicious, too. I had beautiful smoked haddock, with a perfectly poached local farm egg. My husband also enjoyed his locally smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. The hotel staff will also organise golf, and many other activities for you.

Stayed here for one night as part of a work trip and would recommend. My two colleagues were particularly taken with the giant teddy bears in reception.

Rooms seem to have been recently refurbished to a nice standard and were very clean, bathroom slightly dated but was clean and provided all I needed.

Staff were friendly and helpful and seemed well motivated to provide good service in an unobtrusive way. Owner was also visible and involved.

Dinner was of a good standard as was breakfast.

Would be happy to recommend or to stay here again.

Dear ShaunMah

Thank you for taking time to feedback to us.

We have refurbished some rooms however the bathrooms were delayed. We did put a letter in the room for guests but perhaps there wasn't one in your room, apologies.

The team were delighted with the feedback on service and the food, personal yet unobtrusive service is our aim!

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Kind regards

My wife and I stayed in Mackays on Monday eve following the completion on my Lands End to John O'groats cycle ride. We had a double room which had been recently refurbished to a very good standard. It was light and very comfortable. We made use of the No 1 Bistro in the hotel which turned out to be an excellent choice. The food was great. We had the days catch of haddock (not all the catch) which was excellent. ALL the staff were very attentive and friendly. My bike was looked after for me. The cooked breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Try the home made muesli.
All in all the hotel was a very pleasant and restful place to stop and was just the right choice. If I was to be in this area again I would use Mackays and it's No 1 Bistro ,

Stayed here in business for the first time in this area and from looking on the Internet not an awful lot of choice. Rooms looked modern and updated from the website and for area seemed rather expensive and tourist board rating. Room was clean and spacious for a double room single occupancy but was in real need of updated decor, very dated although corner location with windows overlooking town. Perhaps hotel doing a phased upgrade throughout whole hotel and this will be included in due course. Wifi signal great, staff v friendly and attentive at breakfast which was of good quality. Overall an acceptable experience - if looking for a modern style room maybe will need to ask at time of booking but may be higher than the 99 I paid.

i stayed here recently for work and ill be asking for somewhere different next time. the Staff were lovely but the single room i was given at a rate of £89 was a disgrace, the room was right at the top of the hotel and wasnt just small it was tiny! it wasnt very clean, wallpaper was peeling off the wall and the curtains were mouldy! thankfully it was only for one night!

be warned that if you do stay take ear plugs as i got about 2 hours sleep due to the persons snoring in one room, and i heard the persons every move in the room next door to me, i even had the joy of just about jumping out of bed everytime the guy yawned, cleared his throat etc etc there were some sounds i wish i hadnt heard!!!!!!

on the plus side the Breakfast was good, and the food in the Bistro was good, although a little pricey and not a huge selection.

Dear Angkw29

I have looked back through our booking system back to 1st June and cannot find a resident with a name similar to your Tripadvisor name who was on the 3rd floor nor a rate of £89 for a single room.

If you could email me on ellie@mackayshotel.co. uk to let me know your name and when you stayed that would be helpful. I can then look into it fully
