“Unexpected treasure for a wet day. Worth hunting it out”

Not the easiest place to find, but park down by the Harbour and a short walk leads you to this impressive museum. Lots of local history, interesting environmental messages, very thought provoking. The Dounreay exhibit has lots of interesting objects and donations from those who worked there.
The cafe has a wonderful range of home made soups and baking. Well worth a visit, even if the museum doesn't interest you.

“An excellent modern museum - the short film is essential viewing for visitors!”
Reviewed June 9, 2014

This is the ideal venue for a wet day in Thurso - and you are likely to see a few of them! The Dounray exhibition and the Pictish Stones on the ground floor particularly captured our interest but half a day can swiftly pass here!. The star of the show is the short film on the area - go to the top floor first to see it before touring the museum. How they do all this without charge we don't know! The cafe, which is not easy to find in the building, is good for cakes and light lunches.

Information and great exhibitions of Archaeology, geology & paleontology, decorative & fine art, Pictish, early Neolithic, Iron and Bronze Age, fishing era, archival material, Vikings, natural history, social and industrial history plus loads of photographs and photographic reproductions.

Total building has wheelchair access, there is a lift which takes you to the first floor and there is also a lovely cafe.

“Very good indeed ”
Reviewed April 30, 2014 via mobile

Visited here with family and it was a pretty good place to come and visit. The displays are very good and I for one really enjoyed it here, loads of historical stuff in there and all modern displays too, it's far from boring and stuffy like old Skool museums. Down stairs they have a Dounray history museum with a robot arm you can play with too, everybody's happy. Cafe too out back, not bad soup at all, but limited menu. I'd go again :-)
