The Castle has been left exactly as to how the late Queen Mother had it. The tour is great and the guides so helpful, and you go at your own pace. The Gardens are wonderful and a credit to the Team that looks over them. The visitor centre serves good food.

Was met at the entrance door by our guide in trews, a small group of just 10 of us were introduced to the quirky world of the Royals, threadbare carpets, Queen Mothers studded wellies, corgi's stainless steel feeding bowls, each of which would have been individually filled with either chicken, beef, cabbage, or other basic foods. The Castle of Mey reminded me of a miniature low-budget Downton Abbey with all the rigid seperation by status and protocol with origins in the dark ages. The gardens were not at their best when we visited, probably a bit late in the year.
Good points : excellent friendly & informative (ex.Guards) guide, intimate tour, not rushed.
Bad points : anbiguous signage in parking areas, gift shop stocked a number of over-priced 'Castle of Mey Products' that were either manufactured or processed overseas.
Well worth a visit....

The Castle has been left exactly as it was when the late Queen Mother lived there. The only way you can go insdie the Castle is on a conducted tour, which is great - you are not rushed around. Our Guide was a lady who has worked at the Castle for many years and she was a delight and had many interesting stories to tell of life there. The tea rooms were donated and built by an American friend of the late Queen Mother, and the creamed tea there was lovely. Make sure you visit the walled garden area as well.

We enjoyed our visit to Castle Mey. The tour with guide is very informative and provides insight the guidebook cannot provide. This is a "home-like" castle and allows for a more personal insight into the life of the Queen mother and her guests. The photo gallery adjacent to the castle is well worth a look. I would highly recommend this if you are in the area. In fact, it's worth going out of your way to visit.

I am old enough to remember the "Old Lady" but many youngsters and foreign visitors have never heard of her. I appreciated the personal experience of the guides but can't see how they can sustain this, especialy when the Royals move on. Its all rather sad and a bit pointless. But interesting building and gardens if you like that sort of thing.
