My wife and I stayed at The Cairngorm for two nights at end November beginning December. The hotel is located in the main street and is very easy to find. Plenty of parking too within the grounds.
Immediately upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the reception staff. We arrived at 2:45 pm and Sunday lunch was due to end at 3:00 pm. Staff asked us to complete the check in formalities and while we were doing this, a reception staff member went to arrange a table for us and then took us to it when we were ready.
This set the trend for the remainder of our stay. All of the staff are so friendly and attentive - they really do the hotel proud.
Good choice of food and generous portions. Be warned - we made the mistake of asking for the large cooked breakfast and it was gargantuan. So much so, we could not finish it. Just had the "ordinary" size next time and even this was a big feed.
On one of our evenings in, there was a whisky and beer tasting organised to coincide with St Andrews Day. There was a table set up in the bar area where an 'expert' was on hand offering measures of single malt whisky (six varieties and I sampled them all) and the measures were much the same as you might be served in some establishments. I didn't try the beers because if I had, I would probably have had to crawl out of the bar on hands and knees.
After this we headed to the restaurant for an evening meal. We were both in the notion of a burger (about half a pound of meat with seasoning and chillies blended in and all home made). About half way through her burger, my wife discovered hers to be a bit rear in the middle. We called the waitress over and she saw the burger before my wife had a chance to speak and commented that it was undercooked. She offered to take it away and rectify this. My wife was kind of put off the idea of the burger and requested a salad with fries. I was asked about my burger and this was the same. This was taken away and a short while later we had fresh meals fully cooked and complimentary drinks by way of an apology. When the original meals left the table we had already eaten about a third of what was on the plate and now we had another two full meals. To top off this well handled situation, not only was there no charge for one of the burger meals (as you would expect) but no charge was made for the replacement either.
To sum up, the hotel is quite traditional Scottish (tartan, antlers, pictures, plaques, etc). Rooms are clean and cozy, but not chic, with very comfy beds. Staff and locals are very welcoming and friendly and the staff are very attentive to your needs. Plenty of choice in food that is served from early morning until 9:30 in the evening and big portions. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will definitely be back.
