If you have never been up to the funicular railway, you are missing out on one of the best experiences in the Cairngorms. From Aviemore it is only a short drive up through some fantastic scenery to the base station. There is also a bus service for those who don't have a car. Once at the top the views are spectacular, so a camera is a must. There is a very reasonably priced restaurant, bar and gift shop at the top, so why not do as we did and have lunch with a view washed down with a lovely drink from the bar. The mountain garden is well worth a walk through too. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and are more than happy to answer any questions about the mountain and the railway that you may wish to ask. We purchased the year pass as it was only £6 more than an adult day pass, so if you intended visiting again, even only the once and used the railway again within the year, you save money. The annual pass has no travel restrictions so you can travel up and down the mountain railway as often as you wish within the year.

Didn't have geeat weather but it was a good hike to to top of Caingorms and the sky did clear a little bit for some good views. There is a restaurant at the top to warm up with some hot soup.

The railway is in one of the best locations in Scotland with stunning scenery in the most fabulous environment. At £31 for a family of four it is an expensive 10 minutes each way, but nevertheless I'd still go back.
However, from start to finish the staff were unwelcoming and at times downright unprofessional. From the ticket staff who didn't even acknowledge our presence but left us standing wondering if the trains were even running; the train driver who closed the doors with no advance warning and then yelled at us not to leave the overcrowded section as the door would 'cut us in two'; to the staff in the café who again walked away as we approached and then left us standing. They were undoubtedly pleased to eventually get rid of the fried eggs that had been under the lamp for ages. The only member of the team who was at least professional was the foreign train driver who tool us back down. He was professional, made appropriate announcements. Very sad reflection of hospitality in Scotland.

Most worrying was a very lax approach to safety. In particular, we were moved from font to second section of the train, following the loading of numerous drums of rope into an area already occupied by paying passengers. Then at the top, the ground conditions were untidy, with matting randomly placed and a stretcher sled left lying across the footpath, where the public walked. Finally two staff were observed installing rope handrails from Ptarmigan station up to the nearby summit, while members of the public were using the path and in so doing they were dragging ropes past both adults and children. This is certainly not a safe method of work for this activity. All of the above cause us to question overall safety standards on the train and associated equipment.

Thank you for taking the time to review CairnGorm Mountain, we are pleased to hear that you would like to make a return visit. Your review however has raised a series of concerns and we would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of the points you have raised in your review.

We pride ourselves on the level of service we provide our guests and we are deeply sorry that you did not witness this on your visit. CairnGorm Mountain has undertaken ‘World Host’ training with all its front line teams and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our service to our guests. It is certainly not our intention to make a guest feel unwelcome or behave in an unprofessional manner.

The safety of all our guests is paramount at CairnGorm Mountain and we follow strict daily safety checks on all our Funicular train. In addition to this there is an audio safety announcement before the doors open and close to the public. There are occasions when, despite these warnings, visitors decide to exit the train, causing a risk to both themselves and the equipment. Prior to the Carriage Attendant, playing the announcement and thus closing the doors they have to close the automatic platform door and have a visual inspection to ensure the doors are clear.

We cannot excuse the fact that you were asked to move from the front section of the train, this is not our standard operating procedures and should not have happened. Please accept any inconvenience this may have caused you or your party. We are currently investigating this specific incident and the individuals concerned.
Your visit coincided with the last weekend of snowsport operations and as a result we were in the process of cleaning the area for summer. There is safety equipment such as the stretcher sled, pole, ropes which are essential to our winter operation which we are busy clearing.

The final part of your review talks about the summit path ropes. These ropes are an important safety feature in themselves, helping guide visitors to the summit and keep them off the fragile mountainside. The rope is standard size and I am not sure what risk/dangers this posed to the visitors using the path during the day. There were two experienced staff installing this rope guide line and although the rope was being dragged partly along the edge of the path, there were no real observed dangers or risks. With the mountain path being open 365 days a year it is impossible to schedule this work at a time there will not be visitors.

I hope that the above provides you with further insight into our operation and the safe and professional nature we operate. If however you have any further constructive comments as to how we can improve the experience of our guests, please do not hesitate to contact us or feel free to email us your specific comments to info@cairngormmountain.org

Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave us your valuable feedback.

We went up the railway to the top, despite it not being the brightest of days we enjoyed good views on the way up and down. The chap in charge of the railway car was very witty.
We had a good lunch in the cafe and had a good browse around the shop and exhibition. We spent an enjoyable couple of hours up there and will return in the summer with our visitors.

We decided to take a trip on this railway high up onto the mountain.
We were so glad that we did as we were so surprised at the speed that it travelled high into the mountain range only to discover loads of snow and be able to view people skiing. It was a wonderful experience and only wished we were correctly attired to walk into the snow.It really is a fabulous experience.Seeing Snowmobiles too all makes a wonderful winter scene. The journey from Aviemore through the forest and up to the railway terminal is a delight in itself as the nature is pure breathtaking and only wished that we could've enjoyed the area for a longer period of time.
It is well worth a ride on the Funicular as it adds a sense of excitement to a great day out.
