No reservations, No online stuff, nothing like the Railway from Fort William where it take days, if you want to have a visit for a old fashion railway trip and you like to travel back in time, Stratspey is a good day out.

“Afternoon tea in the First Class carriage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

We booked tickets for four people for the 1445 departure from Aviemore on Thursday 22nd August 2013. Beforehand we'd heard that the railway wasn't able to use the steam locomotive in March due to the risk of fire from a dry month and hot coal escaping from the engine so we were quite pleased to see the steam locomotive arrive.

If you too are planning a trip, and wish to travel in First class, you may have difficulty booking online if you have a party greater than two. There is only one First class carriage and that consists of only four compartments so they don't allow you to book more than two tickets online. I think this is a bit misleading because the website tells you that there's no availability and that may not be the case - it's just you need to ring up to check availability and book.

By the way, it's well worth paying the little bit extra to sit in first. You get a more comfortable compartment with soft spring tartan seats that help offset the ricketiness of the track and a little bit more privacy. Not sure if they'd mix the compartments for afternoon tea if there were two parties of two. We were a four so filled our compartment and there was another compartment with a party of three and another with a compartment of two. It might be a bit awkward with mixed couple groups but it was quiet on the day we went.

The first class compartments were labelled from the outside so you knew where you were sitting and the red carpet was a nice tough. The station is kept in good condition with its original victorian splender and it has a separate commuter line as well as the steam railway.

Aviemore itself is very busy with insufficient parking so you're going to want to use the railways car park - which can be found by going right on the roundabout just before you reach Aviemore and follow the road round the back. It's not obvious and we had to ask the staff for directions.

Back to the train, the staff had already prepared the carriage for afternoon tea with cream, butter and jam already out along with cutlery and crockery. The cream looked like a scoop of ice cream and there wasn't a lot of it. It seems we got the same amount as the carriage that only had two people next door.

When you're drinking your tea or coffee hold the cup with both hands or you'll end up with it allover you as the train starts moving.

We were served ham, cheese and tuna sandwiches followed by scones, scotch pancakes and a ginger cake. The scones were quite plain but they were nice with the jam and cream and the ginger cake was much lighter than it looked and tasted great.

The scenery along the route was really nice. On the left hand side their are sheep and pigs and some really nice houses but the best scenery was to the right where there is a Loch or river. The trip isn't very long. There are only three stations but they are raising money to try and extend the line further. It's still a really nice way to spend an hour or two and Aviemore looks like a nice place to explore afterwards too. They do some interesting specials too, like a christmas special with santa and mince pies - I'd be very happy to visit again and see how different the scenery in the winter months!

“Probably good if you're a steam train fan”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

It was advertised as a steam train travelling through magnificent scenery. It was fairly expensive, even compared to our national railways. There was a bit of a guide printed on the leaflet about what you could see from the train. The "fat controller" was good for any children brought up on Thomas stories. I was also told that the track and/or Broomhill Station have been featured in the TV programme Monarch of the Glen. Otherwise, the views were fairly limited partly because of the forests the track passes through, not their fault I know but don't advertise the scenery. I'm sure Thomas children would enjoy it and steam train afficionados but I'm afraid there's not enough for the money for the rest of us.

Thank you for your recent review of the Strathspey Railway and for posting photographs taken when you travelled back in time with us.

We particularly like your photograph of our Broomhill Station, with its outdoor picnic tables, old style advertising and the magnificent mountain scenery behind it. Having the magnificent backdrop of wildlife, plants, hills and mountains around the Cairngorms and the river Spey flowing past was the main reason that the "Monarch of the Glen" TV programme, regularly featured our "Glenbogle Station" in the long running TV series.

As a Heritage Railway, the Strathspey Railway is effectively a volunteer-run http://dailym.ai/141ZiHx, living museum. The expensive overhauls and constant maintenance of our historic steam locomotives and rolling stock is mostly carried out by the goodwill of our volunteers, but the large on-going expenses we incur in carrying out this work are subsidised by the tickets, merchandise and other services we provide to visitors to the Spey Valley. As you can see from our recent TripAdvisor reviews, our visitors continually write that we provide excellent value, especially if they chose the light lunch or afternoon tea service.

All of our staff and volunteers take great pride in maintaining the heritage of the railways of a bygone era, and are always looking for ways to ensure that our visitors have the most enjoyable time possible during their visit. We encourage all our visitors to raise any issues they may have with us here at the railway, so that we have the opportunity to talk to them in person about their experience, while travelling on the Strathspey Railway.

“Amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

We took the steam train ride in September 2010. We went first class and had tea. The food was good and there was plenty of it.

It was a very special train ride as my husband proposed to me while on the train!
