Owner description: Steam through the stunning Scottish Highlands in style. Our steam engines take you on a very special trip through the Cairngorms National Park as you travel between Aviemore, Boat of Garten and Broomhill. Why not make your trip extra special with one of our dining on board options: Light Lunch offers soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee; Afternoon Tea has some sandwiches, scones with jam and cream followed by some delicious cakes; or enjoy a full three course Sunday Lunch or Dinner. Why not upgrade to First Class to enjoy a meal in one of our compartments, finely decorated in it's own tartan, with vintage British Rail mirrors and luggage racks inside. Split your trip up with a visit to Boat of Garten to explore some fantastic walk trails or bring your bike on board to explore the great cycle routes in the area. See if you can beat the train back from Broomhill on your bike!We are also taking part in the Great Railway Treasure Hunt 2013, so there's plenty for the kids to do on the trip!

We went abroad this steam train on Friday 23rd August at lunchtime and was served an amazing 3 course lunch which went down very well in a first class old style train carridge. The staff on the train were very friendly and fast with service and was great to see some lovely views along the journey. A great day out for all the family and a must see for the railway buffs. The train trip costs are around £13 or so and the lunch £15, so its soon mounts up in price.

Just got back from having tea, sandwiches, scones, cakes, jam and cream - and this on a steam train!! Ok it was expensive if you want to look at it in that light - but 2 hours and food for what we paid we felt it worthwhile. In addition to good food there were great views from the windows (try to sit on the right as the train goes foward), lovely conversations with the staff and a very warm welcome all round.
The thing I enjoyed as a railway buff was the opportunity to photo and video the trains coming and going in the Boat of Garden station (good parking). We knew the times of the trains so we were able to go away and come back in time for the next train. I did the usual thing- check their website- which does include the proviso that locomotives may be changed at short notice (with apologies to those travelliing for a steam train)- before making plans. Sad to hear that Caley 828 is not available at present - what a beautiful engine not to be in use.
The ticket inspector- complete with top hat was a star - especially if you are able - as we are- to understand his West Midlands accent. Also to the Senior Driver- our thanks for a great chat.
Great afternoon out

We loved the journey - great views of the Cairngorms - and friendly staff at each of the stations. Just a pity that the tickets are a bit pricey - if you had a large family or group it probably wouldn't feel worth it.

We appreciate you visiting the Strathspey Railway this August, and for taking the time to review your trip with us. We always appreciate feedback from our customers.

We are very fortunate to welcome a diverse range of visitors to our railway, including families, couples and groups across a very wide range of ages. We aim to offer every one of our visitors one of the most scenic, vintage journeys through the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
With engines dating back as far as the late 1800’s, a huge engineering feat is required in our Aviemore sheds, with much of the maintenance on these trains being engineered completely from scratch (as you can imagine, there aren’t many spare parts for steam engines over 100 years old!). All ticket revenue is invested back into improving every aspect of the railway for our guests, and much of this goes back into the maintenance of these very historic engines and the line itself.

We are the premier steam train service in Scotland and feel that our value is reflected in the fact that we offer one of the most unique travel experiences in the Scottish Highlands, through one of the country’s (if not the world’s) most stunning locations.

We hope you thoroughly enjoyed your trip with us, as many of our other visitors have sincerely expressed, and hope to see again in the near future.

10.30 on a sunny Sunday morning is a good time to embark on a steam train trip. The train was in the station when we arrived but without all the fuss I usually encounter with a steam train. With our tickets we were given a leaflet telling us what to look out for, very informative and useful. The carriage was nearly full with all ages enjoying the trip. The staff were friendly but somehow for me the trip lacked atmosphere.

Thank you for your recent review of the Strathspey Railway, and allowing us the opportunity to evaluate the experience you had of the railway.

As you are probably aware the railway is a volunteer led and operated organisation, with the volunteers working tirelessly to operate all the functions of the railway such as the station, trains, shops, platforms etc. It is our volunteers’ intention to make the experience as authentic as possible and as many other visitors will remember, we have characters like the famous Lionel, our ticket master, who in his top hat is a real favourite with the visitors. When possible he, along with our drivers, firemen and guards are always happy to have a chat or pose for a photograph which adds great atmosphere to the platform and train. We encourage all our visitors to get involved when visiting the Strathspey Railway and to approach the very knowledgeable people we have here, to ask questions regarding the engines, carriages, station or to take great pictures.

We are pleased that you found our staff/volunteers to be ‘friendly’ and our leaflets to be ‘very informative and useful’ on your journey. We are always grateful for any feedback and encourage all constructive comments from our visitors in order that we can continue to build on the amazing experience that the vast majority of our customers are accustomed to.
We have been making many changes and improvements throughout the railway over the past year, and are always thankful for any feedback from our visitors. At present it is a very exciting time at the railway with many positive things happening that will help to improve all aspects of customer experience. We are in the process of reviewing the changes already in-place, including feedback from our visitors which will be used to assist future developments.

We hope you will come back and visit us in the future and we wish you all the best.
