Owner description: Steam through the stunning Scottish Highlands in style. Our steam engines take you on a very special trip through the Cairngorms National Park as you travel between Aviemore, Boat of Garten and Broomhill. Why not make your trip extra special with one of our dining on board options: Light Lunch offers soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee; Afternoon Tea has some sandwiches, scones with jam and cream followed by some delicious cakes; or enjoy a full three course Sunday Lunch or Dinner. Why not upgrade to First Class to enjoy a meal in one of our compartments, finely decorated in it's own tartan, with vintage British Rail mirrors and luggage racks inside. Split your trip up with a visit to Boat of Garten to explore some fantastic walk trails or bring your bike on board to explore the great cycle routes in the area. See if you can beat the train back from Broomhill on your bike!We are also taking part in the Great Railway Treasure Hunt 2013, so there's plenty for the kids to do on the trip!

Been on the train once for dinner when I worked in Aviemore. Been meaning to do the trip again in the summer daytime. Wasn't disappointed took the first class option £18 each which included tea/coffee and shortbread. Good supporting literature and the staff were all wonderful - especially the guard and the fat controller. With reference to previous reviews yes I did think that a commentary would be good, but it would mean wiring up carriages and spoiling the original look. The staff were happy to answer any questions and clearly enjoy what they do! I will be joining up as a member to help fund the stretch to Grantown. Great hands on trip saw kids getting access to guards can, foot plate at the engine and pics with the team. Great morning out!

We rode on the train as part of a photo trek group. I found the train to be visually interesting. The ride itself is simple. It is a good, believable recreation of a period train. The steam engine looks really good. Personnel are affable, very helpful. All in all, an interesting experience, albeit a little short (but the volunteers running the train are raising funds to extend the length of the ride).

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend for his birthday as I knew it would mean a lot to him. It was so fantastic. The dinning car looks beautiful and it really set you back in time. Service was good and the food was also lovely. The plates etc were not perfectly clean but everything else was so fantastic that it didn't bother us that much.

The trip was lovely. The views were fantastic. The train goes at a perfect speed which allows you to enjoy your meal and the view. The train stops at the little station and allows you to have a little look around. On return to the train you get your dessert whilst heading back to Aviemore.

Overall, it was beautiful. I would highly recommend it! It is such good value for money.

We are extremely pleased that you and your partner chose to spend your special occasion on the Strathspey Steam Railway and had such a “fantastic” time. The most important thing for everyone connected to the railway is the experience of our visitors.
We work hard to ensure customers obtain the most authentic experience of the railway and how it would have felt to travel by train in the grand age of steam.
We are very proud of the railway, and the fact that you had such a great time is testament to the quality of our service. We try to offer a great service for the best possible value.
Everyone at Strathspey Steam Railway wishes you and your partner all the best in the future. Please feel free to join us again soon, we look forward to having you.

Kind regards

We just went to train on off chance at last minute only crossed tracks to look at it. Was quite expensive. Train was well cared for and clean. Would have been nice to have things pointed out to use, we relied on other travellers

Called into Aviemore station to visit the Strathspey Railway shop, although didn't have time to actually take a trip on the railway. Not impressed. Seemed all a bit haphazard in comparison to the shop at the Carnforth Station and Heritage Centre. Not cheap either, for we noticed old magazines were very expensive. Only 20p each in Carnforth!

Strathspey D, Operations Director at Strathspey Railway, responded to this reviewResponded August 21, 2013

We're very disappointed to read your recent review of the Strathspey Railway, Mr Blackstone, particularly as you've chosen not to review a train journey on our beautiful railway line but instead to publically criticise the price of the "used railway magazines", which our association members donate, to help raise much needed funds for the railway.

The Strathspey Railway is a living, working railway, running nearly 600 services a year – as opposed to Carnforth, which is a static museum, albeit probably an excellent visitor attraction but it won't require the same high level of funding, as the Strathspey Railway, which we require to raise every year, to help maintain our extensive range of historic rolling stock and large infrastructure, including period station buildings, signal boxes etc.

The Strathspey Railway is manned, almost entirely, by volunteers who drive and fire, act as guards and signalmen, maintain our infrastructure, sell railway tickets and work in our station shops. We strive to provide the best service we can and be as welcoming as we can. If anyone feels we haven't got it quite right during their visit, then please talk to us at the railway during your visit and let us know how you think we can improve the visitor experience at this historical visitor attraction.
