Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

Stunning scenery. There is a choice of walking routes to take in the natural beauty of Rothiemurchas.

Walked this in conjunction with another walk really enjoyed it . We were fortunate with the weather. They have some toilets there too which are open even in the winter. The walk is fairly easy going takes only around an hour to an hour and a half. If you walk from the Hilton around and back it takes about 2-3 hours.

The team here is very grateful to you and to all those who help to care for Rothiemurchus. Thank you. We are so pleased you enjoyed walking round Loch an Eilein. Generations of visitors have loved very special place, most people return again and again and they tell us how much they want it to stay the same - stunningly beautiful, romantic, relaxing atmospheric and accessible, many tell us they would like to help care for it. Paying for attended parking is one of the easiest ways visitors can do this and there are different options, £4.50 is the maximum for a car but most pay less.

For years there was a standard parking charge but many couples and single visitors wrote to tell us they felt it was not right that a full car was paying the same charge. So about twelve years ago we introduced ‘the Explorer’ which includes free parking, an excellent walks map and other benefits throughout the Rothiemurchus and the annual Friends of Rothiemurchus for those who visit more often. People can still pay a standard car parking charge if they prefer and this should have been explained to you. We feel this is working towards the sustainable care of a place with many international natural heritage accolades, that is also part of Scotland’s cultural heritage and has been called one of the U.K’s most amazing places.

The challenge for us all is to make visiting Loch an Eilein sustainable. The parking charge helps secure and improve habitats for the many priority species of wildlife who live in the ancient forest which surrounds the loch, contributes towards looking after the outstanding paths, keeping the Visitor Centre and loos open every day whatever the weather, the Ranger service, the friendly attendant to help visitors and the big team behind the scenes who make all this possible.

Thank you for letting us know how you feel. We hope you have many more lovely walks here - Loch en Eilein is always stunning.

Just few minutes ride from Aviemore, there's also a charged parking nearby but it was worth to pay them. They keep the place clean and paths in good condition. There's a nice small cute visitor centre with a gallery inside. But what is the best is the view. It's worth to save a forenoon to just walk around the loch, you'll be truly satisfied!

A few miles away from Aviemore sits this beautiful Loch, lovely walks around the loch and amazing views of the mountains or the ruined castle in the middle of the loch. very tranquil place. worth a detour.

Visited Loch an Eilein several times over the years, great little visitor/information centre. However, the main attraction is the scenery. Absolutely stunning location, lovely walk. However, on the negative side, if they're going to charge £4.50 for 4 of us then they need to maintain the car-park more efficiently. Lots of deep puddles and certainly some benches around the loch would be appreciated, even if only natural furniture, large rocks, logs etc to rest on and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Thank you for letting us know about your visit. We have just resurfaced part of the parking area and the exceptional wet weather at Christmas showed that the drainage needs to be improved. After the busy holiday period and any frost and snow we will close off the flooded section and improve the drainage so that at the latest it is ready for Easter.

We try to keep Loch an Eilein as a wild, natural experience but do appreciate that many visitors would like more seats. We have spent alot of time on deciding where additional seats should be located and on finding the right benches. They are now on the long maintenance list!
