“An easy scenic walk in spectacular surroundings”

Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

“An easy scenic walk in spectacular surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

This is an easy walk round a delightful small loch, with good parking facilities and toilets!
No matter what time of year the scenery is delightful, with plenty of wildlife and flora to appreciate.
It is safe for children and dogs, yet quiet enough to enjoy a peaceful walk. There are plenty of place as for picnics too. The admittance to the car park allows the holder to use it at other locations and gives discount at some shops. The surrounding area also has plenty to offer, activities, galleries, shops and restaurants.

“Lovely place for a great walk.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

Such a lovely place to spend a few hours walking to and all around, on it's on or as part of a much longer walk of which you have several choices on offer. There is a charge for car parking but if you walk from the Back Park Road about 20 minutes duration you can avid, but the estate does spend the money from parking and any donations on the upkeep of the many paths and provision of toilet facilities next to a very nice art shop in the small "But an Ben" cottage. The walk around the Loch on it's own is about 90 minutes to 2 hours and may catch some people out as when you view the loch yout do not see a further one third on the south side that curves around and extends the walk considerably. Additional walks to Lock Morlich and well beyond are avialble for the full day walker or rough hiking / camping person.

“Nice, but not outstanding...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

A lovely little place to visit but it didn't stand out over the other local beauty spots to me. We found Loch Morlich to be cheaper to park, quieter and just as scenic.
