Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

“Lovely walkable loch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

We go to Aviemore every year and always, without fail, go round Loch an Eilein. It has a small car park and the charges are per car. The paths are well maintained and we've seen people with buggies walking around the loch as well as cyclists, walkers and people with dogs (like us). There's plenty of places your hound can get into the water! Lovely clean loch water :)
We've seen red squirrels in the area and we always look out for pine martens too (so far, no luck there). It's not a long walk and the terrain is easy with small rises and falls, so not for those that like a strenuous workout. We've done it in every kind of weather and enjoyed it every time. It's especially lovely this time of year when there are fewer people about and you feel you have this wonderful loch all to yourself.

“Without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Scotland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Scotland,we make a point to visit here everytime we are in Aviemore and it just never gets old walking through the car park and seeing the Loch open up in front of you with the moutains behind it and the castle on the small island in the Loch.

Fantastic view, lovely peaceful area and all within a short walk from Aviemore,a great way to spend the day.

“Beautiful spot!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2013

This is just a perfect spot. Wonderful views, well kept paths, well maintained toilets. Well supplied with picnic benches, small gallery open from Easter to October. Great for a gentle family friendly cycle ride around the loch or a walk thats easy even with wheelchairs, buggies etc. Parking is charged but it is reasonable given the amount of work that the estate has to do to keep the area in good condition and the charge also give you a few extras (map, further discounts etc.).

“Great place to walk”

Great place to walk around. Very serene. The views are spectacular as you walk around. Small cost to park but not too dramatic
