Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

This was an easy very pleasant walk around the loch, which we extended by going around the tiny loch at the far end. A couple of hours in total. Lovely views at various points, though not much wildlife. I thought £4.50 to park was way too expensive. Everywhere else in the area we went to was £2.00 in the rural locations.

the car park charge of 1.50 per person is very fair as it pays for the wonderful upkeep of the trail around the loch as well as the loos and cottage on the estate. A child under 5 is free rather than 50 pence so again no issues with this. Spent an hour and a half walking round Loch an Eilein and the 4 year old was never bored. Mountain bikers, walkers, dog-walkers and their hounds were also marching round and it didnt once rain.

We found this lake very nice and there are very nice walks. We finished up near a gate and we did not know what to do as there were no signs. Going back we saw some cyclists who descended, opened the gate and closed it behind them. We so not know if it was private or could be accessed by all. Also the pasking fee is a bit on the high side at GBP4.50 and we just stayed an hour there.

Absolutely picturesque. Perfect for cycling or walking as not too onerous for all ages. I was a bit surprised at having to pay a small car park charge but when you actually see the loch and castle in the middle, you forget all about the charge!

We visit aviemore at least twice a year and we never get tired of visiting this loch
