Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

Great for all ages ; you can walk or cycle around the Loch and children can splash about in the water. Toilets and a small cafe are situated at the edge of the car park.

As you pull up to the car park you will be asked for £4 to park. We got to park there and were given a map. Not good value. Leave the car further down the road and walk to it. There is only one loch with a (pretty) castle in it. You can't miss it.

We had a lovely walk around the Loch here and it was a great spot for a picnic. Watch out for midges though..!

I just love Loch an Eilein. The surroundings are beautiful and I love looking across to the castle. Great for walking, a quick run, and even a wee paddle. Love it!!

It is beautiful all the way around. Almost a victim of its own success but walk here earlier in the morning or the end of the day and it is much less busy even at peak times. In March only the weekends bring out many folk but everyone so pleasant and sharing the surroundings.
