We've just returned from a Santa weekend at Aviemore with our three year old. We can't honestly find any complaints about the weekend (albeit it was pricey at £670 for the package).
We stayed in one of the woodland lodges. These are very well appointed and the bedrooms are to the standard of a four star hotel - lovely linen, nice toiletries, fluffy towels, robes etc. The lodges also have a lovely log fire and plenty of logs are provided to keep you going all weekend. Bottled water, tea, coffee, crisps and biscuits are there on arrival. The kitchen is tiny and there's no oven, which might be a drawback if you were staying for longer than two nights. I guess it's part of a cunning ploy to get you eating more in the resort.
As for the Santa weekend itself, Santa was excellent, although the location and setting of his 'highland home' could have been done with more imagination. The cabin is located at the entrance at one of the hotels. How nice would it have been to have this as part of a woodland trail for the children, lit by Christmas lights etc?
The Saturday pantomine was Sleeping Beauty - this was really enjoyable. Children and adults alike really got into the spirit and it was as good as any panto we've seen.
We were on a DBB package and had low expectations of the food. However, we were surprised to find that it was really rather good! There was a separate children's buffet and the adult buffet in the Highland Food Court was tasty, varied, and above all, warm(!). On our second night we ate in Giovanni's and anything of the a la carte was included in the DBB rate. Again, it was very good. Breakfast was lovely on both days - porridge, Scottish fry up, continental etc. Plenty of choice.
The hotel staff were excellent - every person we encountered was pleasant and helpful - just what you want when you're travelling with children. We asked for ice cream, which wasn't on the menu, and got it - little things like that made it a great experience.
The spa and pool area are very good - the spa is a nice haven for Mummies to have time by themselves.
So, to sum up, when went there with average expectations which were far exceeded and we had a fabulous time. It's a great place for children - be warned, if you're going there for a romantic break! - and we'll look fondly back at it for many years to come.

Spent a Saturday night recently in the resort and had mixed feelings of the break!
Despite being booked for the 4 seasons we were allocated to the Highland hotel on arrival. Disappointing start, even although reception informed us this was an upgrade!
Like others on here we decided to have a small refreshment and found there were no bars in the resort open till at least 4PM. Had evening dinner in the Aspects restaurant which was good even if the portions were on the small size.....warning to any future diners...the only table available when booking at 4PM was for 8.45!!! The complete lack of evening entertainment in the complex was also a sore point for many of the visitors we spoke to.

Managed to get a good deal during the October Break, we did upgrade to the Highland Hotel I think it cost an extra £40 a night, but after reading the reviews of some of the other hotes in the group, Academy, Four Seasons, Avuiemore Inn...we tookt he advise of other tripadvisors and upgraded. The swimming pool and facilites were great, and you could walk to them through the hotel with your bathrobe on if you stay at the Highland Hotel. The breakfast in the Highland Hotel had a host of extras that the other hotels did not have, my sister stayed in the academy and although their breakfast was good, not a patch on the service and extra choices at the Highland Hotel. We ate dinner in the complex the three nights, the Italian was great, and a really good atmosphere, Aspects in the Highland Hotel was excellent, and it was good that the guests with much smaller noisier children were at one end as it could have marred a really nice atmosphere. The bistro in the Highland Hotel OK, onyl a few choices and then they did not have what we wanted (Lamb Curry), the service not a patch on the other restauants, but maybe there were not enough staff on for the tables, it was still OK but if only eating for two nights, give this one a miss....All in all a great time away, Large Clean Room, so much so we left £5 gratuity every day as the request for extra pillows etc was no problem, service with a smile. The location is great, fantasic outdoor oppertunities close by, quadbiking, archery, clay pigeon shooting etc.....We will return for a few dyas break again, hopefully sooner rather than later......
