Macdonald Aviemore Hotel at Macdonald Aviemore Resort
Ranked #5 of 11 Hotels in Aviemore
Reviewed July 7, 2013

This hotel certainly suits the Scottish skier who wishes to take advantage of it during the winter months. It was a large complex, almost like a mini town, where there were different types of McDonald Highland Resorts depending on one's budget. Being a couple who don't particularly like large crowds or over-commercialized vacation places, we were a touch disappointed in the overall lack of character and ambiance. We were eyeing off other accommodation whilst there in order for us to potentially use places more "Scottish" for the next time we visit the place.

It seems this is probably busy in the winter. We were on a bus tour so most of the place was filled by us. Bar had nice view. The haggis was better here than anywhere else. Not a haggis expert but that is what I was told. Staff friendly. We stayed on building 4 , which was not far from the main canteen/store. Free wifi and nice bar. Closes early though. Overall enjoyable experience.

The overall impression of this Hotel was that it was like a Premier Inn, with some add-ons, but a lot more expensive. We took up the offer of the Highland Executive Double and the inclusive Dinner, Bed & Breakfast options. We were also gifted complimentary bottle of wine and a bowl of fruit - both of which were welcomed.

The room was adequate, bed was quite soft and facilities very basic and a bit cramped; and you would not choose to spend a great deal of time in your room; though as this is in Aviemore and was a resort, maybe this was the intention of the Hotel.

The bathroom was spotless and in contrast to the main bedroom, feeling modern and good facilities. Bit of a shame that the accessories were lacking (one tiny bottle of shampoo, one tiny bottle of shower gel, one shower cap and a wee bar of coloured soap - all for two people). For a reported 4 star hotel, it gave the impression of being a little scrimping on things (especially as the Hotel advertised it as "Fine toiletries"!!)

The Hotel corridors and walkways were old looking and rather dark and depressing, not giving a good impression on arrival or when moving through the Hotel. A few simple improvements (like brightening it up, more lighting and a few more cheery pictures would make all the difference), as it looks as though it has not been updated in a while.

The resort pool and spa (and related) were all good and no complaints (we were fortunate as well that the hotel was quiet, so had lots of leisurely freedom). However, be wary of the "offers" for the Spa, the "weekend special" did not apply to certain treatments, which was not clear from the offer. However, the treatment itself, was excellent.

The first night we ate at the Aspects Restaurant and the food was average-good, but wine prices very expensive. If the package had not included the Dinner as part of the price, the overall price would have been off-putting. However, in fairness, the Assiette of Strawberries was simply delicious.

Aspects was also were you had breakfast in the morning - which was very Premier Inn in quality. Was not that impressed by it - nice room, but food was average.

The second night we ate at the Scottish Steak Club - again, a tad expensive, for the food and wine delivered. Maybe we were expecting more from a 4 star hotel.

Overall, the feeling was that this Hotel needed a bit of a spruce up, a revamp and some modernisation and was all a bit average (which was surprising from a MacDonald Hotel).

Would we return? - probably not, which I think says it all.

Stayed here lots before, now it just seems to be interested in the bus trip brigade. The bar is priced at a re-mortgage level (walk down the drive to the pub) The resort itself never seems to have anything open, the dry ski slope, pitch & putt, chess board all seem to be left to rot. When we arrived early in the week the hotel was almost empty but it still didn't stop them putting us in a room next to the cleaners cupboard and only a view of the tree (and we're Macdonald club members!) needless to say we complained and got moved. We had some fresh milk for tea in our room and the cleaner just left it there for 2 days, the room stunk when we found it still there on the 2nd day, when we took it back they didn't even apologise. This is not the hotel it used to be and we won't be staying again the 3* at the end of the drive can have our business in future.

Room Tip: noisy over the courtyard reception area in the morning as the coach parties all get picked up early...

Absolutely disgusting a very large semen stain on the tartan bed throw and to top it all couldn't get anywhere near reception to complain due to [--] parties checking in. Breakfast was very bland and only just Luke warm, drinks in the bar mega expensive therefor waked into town for normal priced drinks, I am disgusted at the hotel overall, the reason for my trip was a game of golf being that I am a member of another macdonald health and golf club entitles me to free golf at any of their courses but they can keep it

This was our first trip to the Highlands and so local knowledge was limited. This hotel was chosen as it had all amenities on site. The rooms were fine, if you're looking for luxury this isn't it but they are clean and tidy and do what they are supposed to do. The on site restaurants are a mixed bag, breakfast at the Aspect was great, buffet style with plenty of choice from fruit and cereals to a full fry-up if you want one. The Aspect restaurant for dinner was very nice, a la carte or the daily menu, cooked really well. Staff were very helpful and friendly despite appearing to work all the hours of the day. Giovanni's however was not so good, after not having our reserved booking we did get a table but the food was not of great quality and the staff were either hard of hearing or uninterested in what we had to say, it was eat up and get out, not saying avoid just not great. Overall the hotel was good and was a great base to use to explore the surrounding areas and was comfortable and clean, what more can you ask for really.
