Reviewed February 21, 2013

we stayed here as a late valentines get away, didn't get of to the best start as our room was next to the boiler room , so the droning sound was a little much , but they moved us straight away , and gave us an extra key so we could keep the heating on , rooms are a little dated , some of the staff could do with speaking English a little clearer as difficult to understand some , but the young lady at the bar Saturday night (Jane ) was the nicest and most politest young lady I have meet in many years , so a big thank you to her :) . breakfast I couldn't Fault there was an excellent choice from cereal to cooked breakfast , but a little disappointed that it was all self service as the hotel is 4 stars .

Room Tip: do not stay in room 2012 as its next to the boiler room

We stayed at the Academy Hotel within the Aviemore resort. The hotel was extremely tired and dated looking. The carpets were old and threadbare in sections and the general decor looked like it hadnt been updated in at least 20 or 30 years. Our room was a family room but really was just a double room as there was very little space to move around in with 2 adults and 2 kids. The decor of the room was again very dated. There was a double bed and a sofa bed which had two single beds for the kids. Once the beds were out there was a tiny space at the end for getting round the room. The bathroom was very small with no detachable shower head to wash the kids. There was chips in the bath enamel and the cold water tap didn't work very well. The TV in the room was still the old cathode ray style rather than a flat screen TV. No free wireless internet access but rather BT Openzone. Really for this price I would expect hotels to have a free wireless service for guests. The swimming pool is free but you still have to pay for things like the soft play area, cinema etc.
For the price of this hotel room and the fact that it is a large chain such as Macdonald I would have expected a much better quality. We have also stayed in the Macdonald hotel in Edinburgh, Inverness and North Berwick all of which were much nicer than this. The breakfast was fine but not a particularly high standard either.
We certainly wouldnt come back to this hotel and I wouldn't recommend it to others.

Unprofessional and unhelpful front of house staff.
Left standing at bars for upto 15 mins. with no staff avaliable to serve us.
Given incorrect and conflicting information with regard to ski school package.
The site is overall poorly lit, outdated, particularly the shop.
The pool was cold and slides not in action.
Room not ready. Complete lack of atmosphere and it was Christmas time.
On a positive note the Lodges are lovely and the Aspects staff and food was excellent. Very expensive for the overall experience - wont be returning.

Room Tip: Stayed in detached Lodge which was very nice, however very poorly lit on the walk way by the lodges.

We were booked to the Aviemore Inn (with Giovanni's Restaurant as part of the reason) but on arrival "upgraded" to Highland Hotel (4 star for 3 star).Very limited dinner menu for DBB package.Plumbing leak so upgraded to King size executive room which had less storage space and wardrobe that had hangers that stopped it closing.Slow restaurant service and food rarely hot.Agree Spycatcher007. We recommend Cairngorm Hotel.

We decided to go away for a night in aviemore,so I went for the most expensive hotel to treat my girlfriend as it looked the part. when we got there the rooms were nice, but didn't think it was worth the money. The staff were not very friendly, and did not look happy to be there. Once we were ready to go out for dinner we went to the bar for a drink before leaving, we were planning on staying for a few, but after the cost of the 1st round we left straight away. The only thing that was OK was breakfast. The restaurant manager was very nice.

I first came here as a child in the Seventies, not long after the centre opened. There was an ice rink and other unheard of attractions (Go-carts) for this part of Scotland.

Over the years things began to deteriorate but now the "resort" has been "redeveloped". This seems to have consisted of the demolition of all the original attractions and their substitution by a conference centre, a shop (very expensive; all the usual Scotch tat and "designer" brands) and a Costa outlet.

What a sad place this is now. The remaining Poulson architecture is reminiscent of some of the worst "new town" developments in the UK and would even put some parts of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union to shame.
Nuff said, methinks!

We have just returned from Macdonald Aviemore Highland resort, and I had to write this review as we had the most wonderful mini break at their lodges. From arrival the sevice was 1st class. The girls at the Highland Hotel reception were so helpful and very friendly. The lodge itself was wonderful, very spacious and decor was stylish (anta).
My husband and I took our 2 yr old with us and all the staff made a huge fuss of her, Very family friendly resort.
We dined at their golf and country club on our first night and last, we drove there just to see what else in the area, but the resort will taxi you there and back to your lodge at no extra cost. On arrival staff were so attentive to us and our daughter, food was very good and a lovely choice, but it is the staff that made it that bit special for us, I do apologise for not taking note of all the staffs name, but the blonde lady, who delt with us is so nice.
We also ate at the Aspect also very good, yet again they really do mean a family-friendly resort ( anyone with young children will understand), yet again I cant remember the couple who delt with us for breakfast and our evening meal, but thankyou.
I did go to the Spa, while my husband took our daughter to the swimming pool, which they both love. The pool temperature was perfect. I had an amazing time in the spa, Rachael did all my treatments (facial and manicure) Lovely girl!
The resort was very quite when we arrived and the Italian restaurant was closed, but we should have check on what would be open or on when we arrived.
Have to say very great mini break, and will return maybe for the famous Santa weekend breaks
