After a long trip, we could not have asked for a better welcome from Maggie. We were stopping in Aviemore on the outward leg of our trip to Lochinver. We stayed in the large ensuite room with views of the cairngorms. We like space and the room provided it in bucket fulls with plenty of natural light and a lovely kingsize bed. A welcome site for weary bodies and minds.

The B&B is ideally located with a short walk into Aviemore, where we enjoyed an excellent meal at the International Starters restaurant.

We recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled egg for breakfast. I have a reasonable appetite and was not left wanting following the breakfast. An excellent start to the next day of our trip.

When we are in this area again, we will certainly be contacting Maggie to see if see has room to squueze us in. We enjoyed our stay and our chats with Maggie and on reflection, it was the perfect start to our trip. A slice of luxury.

We stayed here for two nights and absolutely everything was exceptional, beyond our every expectation. The house was lovely, Maggie is the most kind, helpful and serviceminded landlady. The room was very luxurious, she has thought of every detail, bed was great, cleanliness perfect. And best of all, she has a whole breakfast menu and almost everything homemade, tasting delicious. You have to try the champagne rhubarb, the full scottish breakfast, the pancakes and the cheese/meat/fruit platter. You really couldn't ask for more from a B&B. We loved our stay, the best B&B we ever stayed on. Thank you Maggie, love from Sweden :-)

I recently booked and then cancelled accommodation at Aviemore Hillside Lodge via booking.com. I’ve lodged a formal complaint with booking.com regarding Maggie’s deceptive description of her property - not only to get my money back but to prevent other couples from falling into the same trap I did.

Her 'hillside lodge' with panoramic views of the Cairngorm Mountains is actually just a house in the High Burnside housing development with a few spare rooms. The 'panoramic views' are not only of the mountains but also hard landscaping, dirt, construction and the noisy A9.

The 'short walk' to Aviemore, as previously advertised (the posting has now been updated) is actually 1.1 miles. For any normal person, this would probably take longer than 15 minutes - the length of time Maggie claimed when we confronted her in person.

Maggie also had excuses for the other issues we raised: 'It's clear from the map that this property is near the A9.' 'There's a short cut to town' and my favourite 'This is a select development of £500 lodges.'

I’ve posted pictures of the surrounding areas, so please don’t be lured by the 'luxuriously' decorated bedrooms and the deceptive description of her property.

This reviewer booked to stay for 1 night but cancelled at 7.30pm on the day of arrival so did not stay at Aviemore Hillside Lodge. No deposit was taken by me or Booking.com.

We prebooked the Hillside Lodge for a short break to celebrate our anniversary but felt badly let down by the property’s location. We were anticipating a highland retreat but there was just no holiday ambience to the place. The “lodge” is a newly built modern house set in a new residential housing estate on the very outskirts of Aviemore – there wasn’t even an official Guest House or B&B sign at the property – the car parking was simply on a monoblock driveway in front of the owners garage. The housing estate is still under construction and the roads and footpaths are not yet completed so expect some mud and uneven surfaces. I do not think the end of work is in sight as, during our stay, the local paper had an article about the next phase of housing on the site getting planning permission.

A further drawback is the busy A9 road which is very close to the house and the noise makes it impossible to sleep with any windows open. The “spectacular views to the Cairngorms”, as advertised on the website, do not exist, and the very distant mountains are completely overpowered by the presence of the A9.

However, the most disappointing aspect is the distance which the B&B is located from the village. Once again the website is misleading and states “only a short walk to the centre of Aviemore”. In reality the nearest shop, bar or restaurant is a good 20-25 minute walk away and the route is not particularly enjoyable. If you want a choice of eating places, expect at least half an hour walk each way. Friends had recommended us to eat in the Old Bridge Inn, but this was going to take about 45 minutes to walk to so unfortunately we had to take a taxi.

We were disappointed with Hillside Lodge due to it’s poor location and would advise visitors to be fully aware of this before they book. The Hillside Lodge website gives the impression of an idyllic setting with great views, yet close to village amenities. Definitely not true – views to neighbouring houses and a busy road are actually the case and the village is “a short drive away” as opposed to “a short walk”.

I am sorry this guest was disappointed by the location of Hillside Lodge but the map does show that we are near the road which the vast majority of guests do not find is an issue as there are so many positive attractions to Hillside Lodge. Many of our guests enjoy the short walk into Aviemore centre for their evening meal. The Cairngorm Room has spectacular views of the Cairngorm Mountains as does the Guest's Lounge. Hillside Lodge was inspected 6 weeks ago by Visit Scotland and was awarded a 4* Award with high praises for a great breakfast menu, warm hospitality and pristine cleanliness. The park landscaping at the rear of the house is almost complete and planting will soon start enhancing this attractive environment of newly built lodges.

We stayed here for four nights
The house is a lovely new house on the edge of Aviemore within a short walk into the town
The Cairngorm room is really beautiful with a large kingsize bed and spacious en-suite bathroom
The view from our window was stunning
Maggie the landlady is so nice and can't do enough for you the little extra touches were nice the bathrobes the toiletries and she filled our flasks for us every day so we had a picnic lunch
Her breakfast is really tasty we both took the cooked breakfast and I loved the cold meat and cheese platter all local ingredients maggie bakes fresh bread every day and squeezes fresh orange juice too
The noise which other reviews mention was hardly noticeable and the landscaping is nearly finished and was not a problem to us either
"Great" place to stay and we will be back Maggie

Only booked here because everywhere else was full and now we know why...the place is horrible...if we wanted to spend some of our holiday in the middle of construction and building work then we would have stayed in London.
After a good warm welcome from landlady Maggie the unfortunate disappointment continued. The hard landscaping was the least of our worries...a big loud road was at the end of the small garden and there was always heavy plant vehicles in the vicinity. I find it hard to believe that this would not bother people...I am not too fussy and stay in a variety of places but it ruined our stay...sorry that we wasted some of our holiday here.
The few positives included a grand ensuite...very spacious and newly fitted. The bed was also larger than average...must have been a king size which was great...ashame we couldn't get a decent rest in it though. The flat screen television with dvd's was good too. Maggie has a good selection available for breakfast...the salmon wasn't tasty though...not sure how fresh it was.
If you could relocate the house then we would return as it was potentially a good guest house...ashame that is impossible as the building and construction work looks like it will be ongoing for years and the big road will never move away...Maggie was a decent wee host but the house and surroundings was no good for us... :(

I am sorry that Sir R found the Hillside Lodge not to his liking. The A9 is close to the house and that is clear on the map on the web and Visit Scotland. The house is triple glazed and when the windows are closed the sound of traffic cannot be heard!!!! The SOFT landscping at the rear of the house will be completed within weeks and will further enhance the panoramic views of The Cairngorms from the Cairngorm bedroom. I am sorry the landscaping has taken place during the summer months but that is beyond my control. It is almost complete and will no longer be an issue and further enhance the beuttiful environment surrounding the area. Aviemore is a long narrow village and most accommodation is on a very busy road in the centre of Aviemore many of them next to busy pubs and restaurants, Hillside Lodge is situated in a select new residential area surrounded by the woods of the Craigellachie hillside. This is NOT a bad place to stay in the opinion of the majority of people who stay here!!!

We stayed here for 2 nights. The room was very spacious, the breakfast was lovely and Maggie the proprietor was really friendly and helpful. It is not far from the A road but this was not a problem at all and in fact this is probably a quieter location then the road through Aviemore itself as that was very busy. We had a stunning view of the mountains and watched an Osprey fly over to go to the fish farm for its breakfast. We would definitely go and stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Cairngorm room.
