“A Hilton hotel by name only.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 24, 2012

The hotel is a Hilton Hotel by name alone.

There are no lifts in the hotel and we are in a dog friendly room on the second floor, so everything had to be carried up four flights of stairs. The stairs are dark and very narrow, and if you meet any of the hotel staff carrying stuff on the stairs you feel obliged to move out of the way for them as they have no room to manoeuvre. Because there are no lifts, numerous trips up and down the stairs were called for to get all our belongings to our room and as we are here over the Christmas period we have all un sundry with us as you may guess.

The bedrooms while quite modern, are so small you couldn't swing a cat in them never mind our labrador, the bed in our room was so hard that I couldn't sleep for more than an hour through the night without waking up feeling sore and stiff; eventually after a long night of broken sleep, I woke up in agony with back pain in the morning. Our labradors bed is softer and bigger so I will probably swap with her tonight!

I can barely turn around in the passage that leads to the en-suite bathroom, which as I'm sure you will have guessed is also very small. There are no full size bath towels with only half size towels available, probably just as well as you would be hard pushed to fling a full size towel around yourself without hitting your hands on the adjacent walls. There's no shaving mirror or shaving light and as a result you have to lean over a small sink in an expanse (well compared to the rest of the bathroom) of marble to try and see yourself in the mirror under what can only be best described as mood lighting. There are cobwebs on the ceiling of the bedroom and the broadband is hit and miss in our room as we are too far away from the server (only managed to log on once in the room). When you do manage to log in down in the main hotel reception area you can only access it for 60 minutes at a time as they do not want people streaming movies!

Last night I bought two drinks at the bar, a vodka and a gin with mixers which cost £12, it's hardly surprising that people are walking past me to their rooms with Tesco bags full of well known brands of alcohol!

Apart from being a Hilton Hotel and expecting the usual refinements associated with the brand, one of the reasons we chose the hotel was that its supposed to be dog friendly however the only place you can have your dog is in your bedroom, or outside on the deck of the woodshed bar which is over 100 meters from the main hotel. Unfortunately this area has no patio heaters or umbrellas which in this climate is a must. Dog friendly it is not.

The only good things I can actually say about the hotel is that the staff are friendly and attentive and that the food from the table d'horte is actually very good, albeit that you have to pay supplements for some of the dishes; which again we did not expect as we came here on what was advertised as the complete Xmas relaxation break.

I for one will not be coming back.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us. We do offer a porterage service for all our guests who require asistance with luggage to the upper floors and this is mentioned upon check in. With regard to pets, we do have a pet policy which details where they are allowed/not allowed. As the Foyer is a food serving area pets are not allowed as we have to take into consideration our other guests. I am sorry that you found your stay disappointing and will share your comments with the management team.

The Lodge.....

We stayed in a 2 bedroom lodge at the end of November... The lodge was clean and warm on arrival and came with a small welcome gift - Scottish biscuits...

The lower level of the lodge was of open plan design - living room, dining room, kitchen and games area... Very well laid out and fully equipped with everything you could require.

There was a patio which was accessed via the french doors - straight into the woodland.. It was amazing to sit and watch the red squirrels running around from the sofa..

The first floor had two bedrooms - One with en-suite which included a spa bath. There was a balcony from the main bedroom..

Parking was directly outside the lodge...

Drawbacks about the lodge from our perspective...

A dog gate - Baby gate would be an excellent addition - for the door between the hall and the lounge! we did ask for one - but they didn't have any! Returning with a dirty dog from a walk requires planning - and would have been made 100% easier with a simple piece of equipment!

Possibly as mentioned by another reviewer, tv's in the bedroom..

Electricity

The heating and electric is metered.. We had the heating on nearly all the time - all the heaters - sometimes even when we went out and in the night.. the bill was £50.00...

Massage Spa

Amazing - We went twice in one week... You will not be disappointed...

The area...

What can we say - It is awesome.. from walking the Loch's to climbing the Cairn Gorms.. There is so much to do.. Amazing place ... and the lodges are right in the middle!!!!

Shopping

There are shops a 5 minute drive away, which include a Tesco.. you can buy all the bits and pieces you need.. We didn't visit the local stores and gift shops as we were too busy enjoying the surroundings but there were quite a few..

Would we return - Yes of course we would and we are already looking to book for next year.. We loved every minute - (Maybe not the 12hr drive :( )

This was our second visit to the area - having stayed at a Macdonald resort previously - this resort is far nicer.

Definitely recommend the dinner, bed and breakfast. Dinner was excellent, and breakfast couldn't have been better. The Hotel is a bit remote, so plan to have to spend the evening in. Alcohol wasn't cheap, but the food and bar service were lovely.

The room was nicely updated as was the lounge. The common areas like the hallways, and stairways are quite tired, and do require some modernization.

It's unfortunate that there was no hot water in the shower, and when we mentioned this at check-out, we were met with a shrug. Couple that with a hysterical baby which screamed the entire night, and our stay was a bit marred. Overall though, I would recommend the hotel Coylumbridge.

We have just returned from a midweek break in this hotel. It is the second time we have stayed here, the first being several years ago. The hotel has been refurbished in some areas but still needs some work to be carried out e.g. the carpets in the stairwells show signs of wear and tear.
It does not have a lift which may prove difficult for those with mobility problems.
I used the swimming pool (there are 2) and gym and found them of reasonable quality. One good point was the "adults only" period between 17:00 - 18:30hrs.

The meals were very good with a varied selection from which to choose whilst the rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable. Checking In and out were both quick and trouble free. The staff in all areas were attentive, helpful and pleasant, what more could one ask for?

Set in the Cairngorm National Park there is a lot to see and do, especially for those who enjoy the "Outdoor" life. If you like shopping Inverness is approximately 35 minutes away and has a wide selection from which to choose. Loch Ness is also within easy travelling distance as are other areas of interest e.g. Culloden, Fort Augustus etc.

We are looking forward to our next break in this hotel and would certainly recommend it to others.

Check in was smooth and quick, we had a deluxe room on the second floor which was a bit on the small side but was nicely decorated, had a comfy bed and a mountain view. Few bits in the room could be done with a refurb.
The lobby of the stairwells and the corridors leading to the rooms were a bit run down and smelt of smoke - thankfully the room itself was free from this.
The pool was great and we used it on each day of our stay along with the sauna and jacuzzi.
We ate in the hotel both nights. The first night it took 40 mins from sitting down to getting our starter, the second night it took 10 mins. The food really was excellent and can't fault it.
There was some interruption to the water during our stay as they had to carry out essential maintenance which meant no flushing toilet an poor flow of taps, this was communicated by a letter being posted under the door. I feel that this would have been better communicated upon check in.
The breakfast is amazing, so much choice, by far the best of any hotel I've stayed at, the waffle maker was great fun to use!
The woodshed bar is great, £2.50 a pint and shows sport.
The staff are all brilliant and friendly and genuinely seem to enjoy working there.
Would I stay again? Yes and I would recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Got a great deal for a 2 night weekend stay.

When we arrived we found out we had been upgraded to an executive suite! Very happy. Had a lovely big separate lounge, huge rain shower and massive bed. All looked like it had been recently refurbished.

Went for dinner on the first night to the Inverdruie restaurant. Had duck to start which was brilliant, just wish there was more of it! Chicken stuffed with haggis which was also brill. Only problem was drinks. No one came for drinks order... had to ask for a wine list. Then our starters arrived before our wine did...

Woodshed bar is nice, but the menu in there is very disappointing.

Nice hotel & location. Will be back.

Room Tip: The executive suites are very nice!

Thank you for your comments on your stay with us. I have passed your comments regarding your drinks service to our Restaurant Manager for his attention. We have very recently reviewed the menu in the Woodshed but must point out that these are mainly bar snacks although we do have a BBQ at weekends, weather permitting. Hope to see you at Hilton Coylumbridge again soon.

Great weekend spent at this hotel. Rooms have been refurbished since this time last year - more luxurious feel about them. Dining room - pleasant experience - varied choices - especially loved the seabass at dinner. Breakfast again varied from continental to full english. Staff in all areas were very pleasant and obliging. Swimming pool area clean although water could have been slightly warmer in spa. The only fault would have to be no lift for first or second floors which could be a problem for anybody with mobility problems although staff on hand to assist with luggage.

Room Tip: We were in room 219 which was lovely but if you have problems with stairs I would advise you to ask...
