“. . . . . . but at least the food was good!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2011

We discovered the Hilton Coylumbridge a couple of years ago when we were touring the area from a B & B in Newtonmore.
We took our daughter to the Fun House and had a look at the facilities. Activity centre next door with dry slope skiing, skating ,quad-biking and wall climbing, skate park (open during May - October) and rink, while children of all ages can scale the portable climbing wall or enjoy the Super Jumper trampolines.
We had a look at the hotel with the swimming pool, and we thought it was the perfect place if we ever come back up this area.
We booked 4 days at the Hilton Hotel in Coylumbridge as it looked like it had great facilities; ie; spa, swimming pool & outdoor activity centre on site with plenty to do!
We arrived on the Sunday afternoon and didn’t do much due to the fact I was exhausted from finishing a 12 hour shift that morning.
The room we were given was on the 2nd floor, steep staircases & no lift.
The room we were in was very hot & we had the windows open all the time but couldn’t leave it open overnight as we were above the kitchen fans.
Next morning after breakfast we headed up to the Cairngorm Funicular Railway. Apparently you get the bus from right outside the front of the hotel, my wife told me. I said I was told it was outside the hotel complex on the main road, across the road.
So, as we waited on our service bus (buses only every hour), a bus came from the opposite direction and stopped outside the entrance road to the hotel. I found out this was the bus we were supposed to be waiting for.
We got a taxi back from Aviemore as the bus service stops around 5pm which price ranges anything from £4:50 to £6.
Tuesday after breakfast we decided to give the hotel pool a go. There are 2 pools; a leisure side with a slide and a deeper pool with a Jacuzzi on a corner. Most people were in the leisure side with the kids sliding down the slide it was quite busy. We went to the other pool which was mostly empty – we found out why – it was freezing!! It is the first time I’ve ever sat in a really cold Jacuzzi and got a cold bottom! When I asked the staff why the Jacuzzi was cold I was told because it was just the temperature of the whole pool. Needless to say, we didn’t stay there long.
We enquired about a massage & pamper session for my wife & daughter as it was the main reason we choose this hotel. The staff at the leisure pool sent us down to the Spa Lodge as it was the other side of the car park. We were a bit disappointed as it was in darkness & locked up – but there was a phone number we could phone to book a session.
We actually found out from the receptionist that the Spa was closed on Mondays & Tuesdays and it wouldn’t have mattered if we had phoned it! Nothing of this is mentioned in any literature to do with the hotel.
We had a walk over to the Fun House as our daughter (Who is 11) was desperate to go! Said on all the signs open from 10am till 6pm, only to find a sign on the door saying it was open from 12 to 6!
We headed into town after that as our morning activities were wasted!
We went to the train station to enquire about the Strathspey Steam Railway only to be told it it wasn’t on until tomorrow – we leave tomorrow!
After ambling around the shops in town for something to do we decided to get the bus back to the hotel. We waited from half past 2 till 20 past 3. Sure there was something wrong with the bus service we jumped in a taxi, the driver said there’s no service during the afternoon when the schools are on as all the buses are on school bus duty.
We got back to the hotel & headed to the Fun House in the hotel complex, only to find out our daughter – who was desperate to go was an inch too tall & didn’t get in after all!
Decided to go for a coffee in the dinner but had to ask the staff to turn the music down as it was blaring – not surprised the place was empty!
We concluded that our stay in Coylumbridge was nearly over and that it wasn’t a complete disaster.
The food was excellent & the service in the restaurant was very professional, but we could have been stuck in the hotel for a week with a couple of bored kids under 5 (which we saw in droves) after tea time in the foyer / bar area.
So much for the family hotel with loads to do – should say ; Closed Monday & Tuesday. (Especially when we have booked from Sunday to Wednesday)
We told all our family & friends we were going on a super pamper & spa session at the Hilton up in Aviemore. You should have heard when they said after hearing about our wee break.
Would I go back? No chance! We wouldn’t recommend it either!

Room Tip: Don't go near 273 - like a sauna.

Have used this Hotel a lot over the years and it is good IF you have small children! Had to agree with other reviews that it was very noisy with mostly under 5's running about. You can hardly hear yourself think in the dining room for "weans" crying and screaming!! However the rooms are good but the best ones are the family suites which have a separate bunk room that sleeps up to 2 children. The family rooms with 2 double beds are good value but are a bit cramped as they are really just the same size as a normal double room but have 2 double beds in them. Most of the staff were very helpful but few are Scottish. Breakfasts are buffet style and there is a very good selection of food , if you dont mind queueing with all the aforementioned "greetin weans". Dinner was a bit of a let down and yes the restaurant could do with a makeover as it is stuck in a 1980's timewarp and is very dingy. In the past the under 5's had their own High Tea room which personally I would bring back! Dont think I will be returning.

Room Tip: Family Suites are good if you get second floor.

My wife and I have just returned from a 3 night stay. Please do not choose this Hotel for a peaceful break as it is very child friendly. Children at breakfast, children at lunch and children at dinner, mostly under 5's crying and running wild, even at 2130hrs in the evening.

Other than that the de-luxe room was excellent, the meals were very good and the staff very helpful, apart from staff in the Grant restaurant who seemed to mirror the surroundings which were very dark. This restaurant badly needs re-furbished.

Room Tip: Pay for de-luxe room

Great Hotel in the Scottish Highlands. So beautiful. The hotel is surrounded by gorgeous forest, stunning river and many walks to lovely Lochs all accessible from this hotel. The peace and quiet is extraordinary. The rooms have been refurbished and are very comfortable and spotlessly clean. There are two restaurants on site. Both excellent but preferred the A la Carte "The Bistro'. Excellent food and service. The staff overall were professional and very friendly. Reception and Housekeeping staff also were fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. They have great entertainment in the main Foyer most nights..we saw some excellent musicians. This is a family hotel and dog friendly..so expect to have lots of kids around you. The hotel is aprox a 20 min walk into Aviemore(their main village and shopping centre) where you'll find large Supermarket, shops, hotels etc. And as always..you can trust and rely on the Hilton brand to deliver excellent service, food, fabulous breakfast and feel like you're part of the family. Thankyou.

Room Tip: Ask for 2nd floor..quiet rooms.

Have stayed here a few times but the place is not improving! Rooms OK and well equipped. Ours was 2nd floor miles away from reception and up a VERY tight stairway--NO lifts. Corridor was often very ill lit and I could not get switches to put on any more illumination. Staff were polite but not overly helpful. Dinner was really pretty good and served well. Breakfasts were self service except for supply of coffee which took ages to come--far too few staff. Cooked dishes for breakfast were not bad but have had lots better in more than one simple B & B in this region !
Swimming pool and leisure centre are first class and the grounds are well maintained.

Room Tip: Specify your floor NO lifts

Stayed here when in Aviemore, hotel reception seemed new and nice and the rooms were good, clean and basic but good rooms, my only real downfall was the dinner room, it was like going back in time, terribly old fashioned and dark (for some reason all curtains are drawn, which I found odd as felt dark and dingy) and the actual food was not great either, shame really as all the deals include dinner so for your money you want to eat here, but was not impressed....

No WiFi in the rooms but in the lobby and reception area which has plenty of sofas and places to sit, so didn't mind.

Lots of parking and cars seem safe, best to park round back of hotel.

great location though right in the middle of the park especially next to Rothiemurchus, the farm shop has amazing food you can buy and take home and it is minutes walk from the hotel or a two minute drive....took a land rover safari trip, was highly impressed it was fun.

Our third time at this hotel and was great as always. Have a 2 & 3 year old. Toddler break was great value for money, kids loved it. Considering going back in August. Love the fact of all the things that were inculed in the deal. I knew to book times for dinner because it was going to be busy. Rooms are great - family suite ideal for us

Room Tip: Book dinner times before you go.
