“nice weekend break!!”
Reviewed February 20, 2011

stayed here for the second time, staff lovely as usual at check-in and through out our entire stay.great room decor, but beds are too soft as are pillows ,so didn,t sleep very well.no views from room, looked out onto parked cars outside. aspects restaurants charge a supplement of £7.00 supplement for steak on top of the £20.00 per person allocation for dinner for a 2 course meal, but this is mentioned in menu, the chicken was served on a bed of mash which was nice, but not enough on plate -even veggies are charged as an extra supplement-on this particular dish i think this is a bit steep and should have been included anyway. great breakfast plenty to choose from.would certainly return to this hotel. girl at check-in and waiters/waitresses in aspects very attentive and efficient.

I came up overnight on an impulsive last minute trip to chase a slim possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. So I was only in Aviemore for 13 hours, overnight, thus did not sample the full range of facilities at the hotel and the complex of which it is a part. However I was more than happy with my luxurious Highland Executive room which was so impeccably clean I felt as though I were the first person ever to stay in it. At the same time the comfortable armchairs and cushions gave a feeling of cosy pampering and prevented it from feeling too formal and "sterile"; a winning combination. Some reviewers have found the arrangements at this resort to be somewhat complicated, with reception, meals and accommodation being in different buildings (though this particular hotel is the one which also contains Aspects restaurant where breakfast is taken); I can relate to that impression but once you realise that the layout is as it is and expect it, it's not too taxing to get used to it. There are signposts at regular intervals and in every place where there is more than one way forward. I am rubbish with directions and managed to suss it out in a brief overnight visit, with the help of the staff who I found to be cheerful, courteous, professional and infinitely patient! Getting to my room involved one brief return to the outside through what looks like a fire exit and across to the next part of the corridor, which was unexpected and made me question whether I had followed the signs correctly but once I had figured it out, the only other complication was finding out how to operate the keycard to get into my room. Rather than put it in the slot and wait for a green light, you have to put it in and withdraw it quickly. Once inside the room, the keycard is placed in another slot just inside the doorway to activate the heating and lights; anything plugged into a regular socket with an on-off switch still receives power when the keycard is removed, so anything in the refrigerator is perfectly safe. If there are two of you sharing, one person's keycard can be left in the inside slot in order to keep the heating on and the lights can be switched off manually on going out while the other is kept with you to regain access to the room; if like myself you are staying alone, another keycard will be provided if you wish to keep the heating on for your return. Having the inside slot right by the door serves the useful additional function of making it less likely guests will forget their keycards and accidentally lock themselves out! The bed was extremely comfortable and the food in the well organised breakfast buffet delicious with a wide range of options and friendly service; I saw staff giving helpful updates to guests who had come up for snowsports as the road to Cairngorm Mountain was closed first thing in the morning. It was an enjoyable getaway. Oh, and those Northern Lights? Well, I cannot say that I definitely saw them; it was largely cloudy and the full moon dominated the gaps of clear sky but there was a definite greenish, electric quality to the light coming through. Aviemore rocks. Any time spent there is worth it. If you stay here, expect to invest just a little time and concentration into getting to know your way around the complex and then enjoy the rewards!

Just had a thoroughly enjoyable break at the Macdonald Highland and cannot fault it. We have already booked a return visit. Room bright, spacious and spotless, as was the bathroom. The breakfast buffet selection is varied and generous - really sets you up for the day. We also had a lovely meal in Aspects restaurant at the hotel and this turned out, quite frankly, to be of a much higher standard than one might expect from a chain hotel. All the staff we dealt with- reception, restaurant, bar and housekeeping- were friendly and efficient. The Highland is a great base for the varied outdoor pursuits around Aviemore with just a touch of luxury. The resort is popular with families, so the pool gets crowded and noisy at weekends and school holidays.

Dear tiggScotland

Thank you for the positive comments that you have made about our hotel and the staff.
It is always our intention that all of guests receive an enjoyable experience whilst dining in Aspects and I am delighted to hear that you did. It is always satisfying to hear that we have not only met our guests’ expectations but exceeded them.

The leisure facilities have proved to be very popular with many of our guests and as you state can be extremely busy and noisy over school holiday periods. It is for this reason that our opening times (8am until 8pm) are extensive to ensure that even in school holidays the pool does have quieter periods for guests looking to enjoy a leisurely swim.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Macdonald Aviemore Resort in the near future.

My family and I are just back from a stay at the Highlands Hotel in Aviemore which we have used a few times now and have always been impressed with the facilities and standard of room we have had , this particular stay was not any different.
Right from checking in with Katrin to checking out with Gordon and Gina the friendliness and warmth of the staff was very evident and they all seemed to have a smile on their face which is re-assuring when staying at a hotel as it gives the impression that they are happy and content with what they are doing. Our room was an executive family one which was very comfortable with a large bed and two singles for the children and a large bathroom with good sized bath ( excellent for a soak after a day on the slopes). We were also just along from the leisure centre which we used in the morning before breakfast to shake off any stiff joints from the previous days exertions. The fitness suite I am told by my wife was also state of the art with plenty of equipment and machines for a right good workout.
The food in Giovanni's was as tasty as ever with our two children eating from the fairly extensive kids buffet ( not just sausage and burgers on offer). After that we went to the family entertainment in the Peregrine Suite which is just above the main reception and was a mix of young childrens interactive games and a Broadway presentation which was very well attended by all ages.
Another touch which I was delighted with was a bottle of chilled white wine in an ice bucket left in our room for us which we were not expecting but appreciated greatly. We are members of their loyalty club and have stayed at the Aviemore resort three or four times in the last year and this is maybe a little thank you for being loyal customers.
Top of the Pops is how we would describe our stay at the Highlands Hotel with a big pat on the back to all staff who we met.
Very soon we are off to the Alps for a wee skiing holiday but hopefully will be back to the Highlands Hotel for another enjoyable stay and some skiing before the season ends.

We booked a package deal of 2 nights accomodation which included food vouchers, not a cheap weekend stay!! However due to the tremendously bad weather, all routes from our home to aviemore were closed (we tried for 5 hours in terrible conditions). called the hotel to let them know that we would not be able to make it and asked if we could arrange different dates......... they said they would call back.........which they did not! I called back again and tried the same approach of re booking alternative dates the firm answer was no chance.......therefore we have now been charged almost £200(cancellation charge) for a break we didn't take!!! We stay in Aviemore more than 6 times per year and would love to recommend this hotel, but can't.......poor show from customer relations!

Their view of customer service would resemble that of a hissing badger's. While cute and cuddly from 100 feet away, get close and you'll have an entirely different experience. They place seems to be populated and run by people who think you owe them something even though you are a customer.

We were originally booked into The Four Seasons for our 2 night DB&B break but we received a call a few days before advising that we'd been upgraded to the Highlands.

Upon arrival we were imediately checked in by the friendly and helpful reception staff and made our way to our accomodation. The room itself was large and basic but it was extremely clean. The only downside is that the walls are relatively thin so you do occasionaly pick up some noise from the corridors, but nothing significant.

We dined in the bar on the first night and in the A La Carte (Aspects) on the second. Although the menus in both are small the standard of food is excellent. A special mention must go to the waiting staff who were extremely efficient. Breakfast is buffet style in Aspects restaurant and the selection of food caters for everyone.

The facilities in and around the hotel are first class. The swimming pool and leisure facilities are probably the best that I've seen at a hotel in the UK and the gym is very well equipped.

I'll definitely return.
