In 2010 I decided for my 70th year I would kayak the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness, and what a great decision that was. Many weeks of planning and with the help of very good friends regarding the logistics, both Irene and meself, two septuagenarians,( but 16 year olds in spirit ), set off. What a fabulous adventure. In the four days it took us to complete, we experienced the most stunning scenery and delightful hospitality from the loveliest people you could meet.Although the trip was pretty arduous,it was well worth it, both from the amazing scenery and wildlife we encountered and the incredible sense of achievement we felt at having coped with some severe weather conditions that only the Highlands can offer. Severe but at the same time, wonderfully exhilarating. Would I do it again? You bet.

We are just back from a great week on board Fingal of Caledonia cruising through the Caledonian Canal. Not just cruising as there are opportunities to walk, cycle, canoe and sail with the friendly and competent crew. All equipment is provided including mountain bikes and helmets. The eleven passengers were soon into holiday relaxed mood helped by the reasonably priced bar and wonderful food provided by Tree who has been cooking on board for the past seven years. Skipper Dave, bosun Andy, Alfy and Iffy were great fun and made sure everyone enjoyed themselves whether indulging the outdoor activities or simply watching the beautiful scenery pass by.

travel Inverness to Fort william on the Fingal of Caledonia a 128ft X 14.5ft dutch barge for 6 days walking or cycling Boat takes 12 persons in six double cabins. This is an activity barge taking people on the whole canal for 6 day activity breaks ( 79 miles cycling or 62 mile walking you need to be reasonably fit) Mountain Bikes, canoes etc all supplied along with all food and facilities not recomended for young kids as there is ladder access in the bow and stern, this is a great way to see the whole of the great glen
