“Sunday brunch”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

Visited for a family birthday. Been before for meals. Big deal made on menu about second course-the french table. What a disappointment. Some fish, pate and chopped cucumber and tomato! My main course of roast beef was awful. dry, no gravy and a brick hard yorkshire pudding. i returned it. i was given the same plate back with half eaten meat and veg and a new pudding -shocking.The worst part was trying to get some water. We had bought drinks, including bottled water, but our son only drinks water. Getting a glass of iced water was hard work. The waitress wouldn't part with the jug and it took many attempts to get a refill. I think after slapping a ten percent service charge on the bill they could manage a few glasses of iced water.

“Very comfortable west end hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Stayed for private function and were well looked after for dinner, although we did have to negotiate a lot over availablilty of high-end of wine list. Staff were excellent and helpful from check-in to departure.
The hotel is a series of private houses all joined together so easy to get a bit disorientated! I had a very comfortable room with its own foreplace and lounge area over looking Great Western Road. Not much traffic noise. Big comfy bed with lots of pillows, nespresso in room etc. Only issue was black tiled bathroom. Well appointed with combined bath and shower, lots of large fluffy towels but lighting poor if you are planning to shave in the morning!
Better than a stay in a generic large hotel and would recommend.

“The best Sunday brunch in Glasgow (or any where else)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

From arrival to departure (4 hours later - and that in itself says quite a lot about brunch) it was a delightful cuilnary experience in the most comfortable, characterful and relaxing surroundings. The food was exquisite, the service and friedlieness/efficiency of the staff first rate. If you ever have (enough) time to spare this is a MUST.

“Getting near the bottom”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

I used to love this place. It was smart, elegant, attentive staff, good food, and expensive. We held our wedding reception here. I have stayed in it, dined in it, and every year, 25th April, we go back on our anniversary.I have watched it deteriorate over the years. Last night Saturday 25th April, it reached a new low. Table booked in the restaurant, for 8.30, we arrived 8.15, which I was reliably informed, by the bar waiter, is now the Bistro, They appear have introduced a Pre Theatre, or Groupon deal, so when we arrived, it was total chaos, with randoms, who had arrived earlier, being dished out complimentary glasses of champagne, for their 'delay'. The bar, when we finally got a seat, was overflowing with dirty glasses, drinks were being knocked over onto the carpets, by overworked bar staff, We were asked three times, what name had we booked under, we were offered menus twice, and at 9.10, the very harassed guy in charge, came and told us he had no tables. It may be 5 minutes wait, it may be 15 minutes, he, to quote, 'did just not know'. We suggested that perhaps it might not be a great idea, to choose off a pretty bizarre menu, and pay some 175.00 quid, to eat at 10.00 at night. The Italian Bistro, at the bottom of the road, was looking preferable. Don't go, states Basil, you can have a complimentary glass of Champagne. No thanks, said I. His parting comment was 'Can I get anyone to phone you?. Eh, no, we will never go back.

I truly understand the predicament in today's economic climate. We want to be five star, but not enough people are around anymore with five star pricing. So open it up with deals, issue is, the deal seekers, want it all for nothing, and will only come back if the deals get better. End result, the race to the bottom.... Well congratulations One Devonshire Gardens, you have almost made it. Comes with a two star rating though, be prepared............

By the way, The Italian Bistro, 1051 Great Western Road, was good, and at 54 quid, great value

“Ok but didn't live up to expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

Bought a 5pm deal for lunch plus glass of fizz for 2 for £40 supposedly worth £72. Welcome was good and shown to nice table in nice room. Had to ask twice though for the glasses of fizz. The table next to us who arrived about 15 minutes after us were offered theirs immediately so was a bit annoying. The menu offered 4 choices for each course which was a bit limited. Our choice of sea bass was listed as being accompanied by a tomato risotto. When asked about side orders my husband asked about accompanying veg and was told the sea bass had pomme purée ( mashed potato to most of us!!) I did think this was a bit strange to add to the dish but when it arrived it was only the mashed potato - turned out it was an instead of though this wasn't made clear. To make matters worse my potato was cold - cold mashed potato is not a beautiful thing!! Was changed though no offer to take husband's dish away so he was finished by the time I got mine. The dessert was the star of the show which saved an otherwise average meal. The addition of a bottle of red 2 coffees and a side of fries added £43 to the bill. The waitress was chatty and cheerful which also helped but I wouldn't rush back.
