“The worst hotel we have ever stayed in”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

Possibly the worst hotel we have ever stayed in along with terrible service from staff and we are not that fussy! Stayed while on business at the secc with colleagues unfortunately for 3 nights as we could not book out after realising the hotel was so poor due to a £75 cancelation fee for each room. Arrived to find very small rooms, uncomfortable mattress with two very small pillows and just to top it off there was only one towel for two of us. We also could not gain access to the free WI Fi provided. Companied about the towels and basically had to justify why we needed two. No Iron in the room either although one was provided but has to hunt for a board in the corridor.

Breakfast actually looked good but went for the cooked breakfast option to find it cold and other guests complaining about this. We brought it to the staff’s attention as it is obviously a food safety issue but nothing done for the duration of the stay.

Day 2. Came back in from a busy day and went to the bar for a pint. The beer was as flat as a pan cake! All the other guests in the bar were complaining but the staff did nothing about this. The manager actually came in to the bar, tested the beer and said see there is nothing wrong with it. Just an indication of how uninterested the staff are in this hotel.

Day 3. Sunday. Woken up at 8.30 by the cleaning staff wanting to clean our room. Finally went to book out before our meeting but were then hit with a bill for the breakfasts for the 3 days although this was all inclusive through our reservation with booking.com. The staff would not believe this and I had to go to the bother of getting my laptop out to show the confirmation of the inclusive breakfasts.

The only reason we went to this hotel and not the Hilton across the road was the inclusive breakfast. It was the same room rate and DO NOT PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THE CAMPANILE EXPERIENCE! The Hilton looks a far better option!

Room Tip: Book into the Hilton across the road!

Dear GregorM

Thanks for your feedback. Sorry that we did not live up to your expectations. It would appear that bookings.com, where you made your original booking had some irregularities with your particular booking that caused us some confusion. Bookings.com state; ‘the breakfast policy has conflicted slightly with the cancellation policy, as the breakfast included rate should be linked with Advance Purchase conditions, and this booking has a flexible cancellation policy’. This is where the confusion first lay with the booking and the cancellation thereof and why my team wanted to clarify the situation.

All our rooms are of a similar size between 12.5 -14sm with exactly the same facilities within each room. We offer ironing facilities, and whilst there are no irons in each room, we have these readily available on request from reception, and ironing boards are located at the end of each corridor. With regards to our linen provision, and the number of towels that we provide in each room, I can confirm that you, and every room is provided with two bath towels as a standard. We offer an extra supply of towels at reception on request and always happy to oblige should guests request further towels, supply permitting.

Your comments with regards to our beer being ‘flat as a pan cake’ and the staff being uninterested are somewhat exaggerated. My team had informed me that on this occasion, one guest had commented, after purchasing two pints of Becks, one of these being a tops, that they were not happy with them which were duly replaced, there were no other comments raised from any other guests staying with us during this busy period, and feel that your comments are misleading to other readers of this platform. You are quite correct that the manager on duty did check the beer and everything was satisfactory but replaced your drinks and was informed that that was fine.

Once again your comments with regards to breakfast are made in isolation. We recognise that we may not always get things right, as hard as we try, sometimes things happen that affect the service that we offer but we are always keen to rectify this once brought to our attention, as we do from time to time.

We recognise that we are budget hotel that offers value for money, and in order to remain competitive we always offer rates that are lower than the HIlton Garden Inn just over the road, as they without doubt are a superior brand and can command higher rates, and find your comments relating to the HIlton being cheaper astonishing, as we always price ourselves less than them.

Our housekeeping team are instructed to gain access into any room that requires cleaning, that does not hang their ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door handle as required, as we have guests that check out early without reception knowing, and in order to turn these rooms around as quickly as possible to allow arriving guests access is something we try to achieve to satisfy early arrivals. I have been informed that you did not display your ’do not disturb’ sign, hence housekeeping requesting access, sorry for the inconvenience this caused.

I should like to thank you for your comments once again, and if we can be of assistance to you in the future please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes

Hotel was not very close to downtown Glasgow but close to SECC if one were doing something at this centre, We were not. Room was small and had two single beds which were fairly comfortable and clean. Breakfast was typical English and buffet style. If one were going to visit Glasgow this would not be the place to stay.Too far from city centre.

Dear 2togo45

Thank you for your recent feedback. Sorry to hear that you were disappointed with our location. We generally find that the savvy traveller undertakes some research prior to booking any accommodation, with the internet being so readily accessible with an abundance of information to hand, the traveller can make an informed decision on where best to stay that meets their requirements. Whilst we are not located in the heart of the city centre, and never profess this, we are easy walking distance along a flat foot path along the river Clyde, and with a train station just over the road with regular trains to/from the city centre that take just a few minutes. We also find that our regular guests actually enjoy the positioning of our hotel to the city centre as we do not get the noise that is associated with a busy city centre.

With regards to your comment that we are not the place to stay for someone visiting Glasgow, this is naturally your opinion and I would totally disagree with you, as would our regular visitors that stay with us would. I would base this on the fact that a lot of visitors come to Glasgow for a number of things, shopping, conference, business, concerts, to visit places of interest including art galleries & museums and sporting events and we are perfectly positioned for one to take advantage of all those things, as comments on this platform would testify.

A very short walk to/from the SECC and short walk to the train station (there is a covered enclosed walkway). Very good full breakfast (you have choice between continental or full) -- worth the few extra pounds. Front desk staff very friendly and willing to share suggestions of how and where to go. Many parts of the city worth seeing are within a 15 to 30 minutes walking radius

Stayed here for one night whilst attending a gig at the SECC. Very pleasant staff, especially Derek the barman who was chatty and friendly. The room was slightly smaller than we are used to but clean and well maintained. Bathroom was nice and the shower was excellent. Breakfast wwas nice in the morning. Would definately stay here again if attending a concert - especially after seeing the taxi queues once the gig had finished.

Just back from a business trip to a Conference at SECC.

Campanile is perfect for that location - either for an exhibition or for a concert etc. Just a couple of minutes walk from the main entrance to the Exhibition Centre but surprisingly quiet for what I feared might have been a noisy location due to the main roads around the area.

Reception staff were very friendly and helpful at all times (as has been commented by others, they are ready with a joke and Andrew has a ready wit - something other hotel chain receptionists could learn from). I felt like I was being welcomed as a regular even though it was my first visit!

If I have anything to criticise it is (1) the size of the rooms (we were in 419) which are on the "tight side". With two of us it was sometimes awkward to move around the room at the same time as there is not much space between the end of the bed and the wall, and (2) the very tight hanging space provided. Being two men with suits and shirts meant squashing things in whilst trying to prevent creasing.

Good water pressure in the shower and no shortage of hot water. I understand there was a problem with the hot water system during our stay, but we didn't experience any difficulties.

Breakfast was great - the only criticism is that the hot buffet food could have been a bit hotter (and could the kitchen staff separate the bacon rashers so they aren't stuck together as it would make it easier for guests!) The young man who greeted us for breakfast (his name badge only said "Trainee") was very attentive but not pushy and he worked extremely hard making sure things were "just right" on the mornings we saw him there. He was obviously enjoying his job - as were all the other staff we met.

If you want to go into the city - there are bus stops close at hand but we used the train from the Exhibition Centre station - a good 5 minutes walk - and at £1.50 for a single ticket right into the centre it is good value.

All in all - perfect for our needs for a four day Conference trip. Would I stay here again - YES definitely!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river, overlooking the hotel car park, are probably quieter than the other side of...

Dear Travellerwithtaste

Thanks for your positive comments acknowledging our team and the service they provide and the product we offer. We do encourage our team to be themselves, natural, courteous and treat everyone with respect and feel this is an attribute that sets us aside from our competitors, and it seems as if Andrew captured that ‘home from home’ feeling with his welcome without being to familiar which is brilliant to hear. I am also delighted to hear your comments on Craig, our trainee, showing bags of enthusiasm and hard work. We work very closely with JobCentre Plus helping those that are looking for work to get back into work, so we take them under our wings, induct and train them, then support and guide them with a view to employing them, and Craig is doing just that. He has grown in confidence and fast becoming one of our stars, and I will be sure to pass on your comments to Craig, he will be over the moon, as we are with his performance. Sorry to hear that you found our rooms a bit of a squeeze, unfortunately there is very little we can do about this as all our rooms are of a similar size. I take onboard your comments with regards to breakfast and will remind chef and the restaurant/breakfast team about the bacon and the heat of the chaffing dishes, as they should be monitoring this throughout the service, sorry for the inconvenience.

What you have certainly highlighted is that whilst material service is important, personal service is king and so important in ensuring repeat business in our industry, and it is great to hear that you recognise that we are providing this.

We all look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.

Best wishes

A one night stay here whilst attending a meeting at the SECC. There were a lot of good points; the location was very convenient, reception staff were friendly and cracked a joke, free WiFi was a considerable bonus. ( I had stayed the previous night at a chain hotel elsewhere where they asked for £4.95 for an hour of WiFI...). I was pleased to find half a dozen teabags and some biscuits and sweets in the room. The room was clean, there was a large flatscreen TV that worked easily and well and the shower was hot and vigorous. There was an Italian restaurant just across the road. So far so good.

I would have gladly rated this hotel Excellent if it were not for the mattress. I stayed in room 217 and I have to say the mattress was so worn that you could feel the springs through it. Clearly beds in hotels get a lot of use but this mattress was too worn for comfort and could have done with replacement. A good night's sleep is very important and is inhibited by feeling the mattress springs!

Dear Loungerlizard

Thanks for your comments and glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us whilst attending a meeting just over the road at the SECC. You have certainly highlighted a number of great facilities that we offer, of which there are many more as previously mentioned throughout the various comments on TripAdvisor. I am sorry to hear that you found your mattress uncomfortable and could feel the springs poking through. You are quite right, because we are an extremely busy hotel our beds have been used extensively over the past 8 years that we have been open, and they are due a change. Although some mattresses are better than others in terms of firmness, we have started to change a few at a time as part of our ongoing refurbishment and update. I wished that you would have brought this matter to our attention whilst you were in residence as we have spare mattresses that we could have swapped yours for or even changed your room, as a good night’s sleep is so important in order to start the day right. I will certainly look to change this mattress immediately and thank you for bringing this to our attention in order to get that ‘excellent’ when you next come to stay with us.

Date of stay: September 14, 2012
Purpose: Designated hotel for Britain and Ireland Explorer cost saver guided tour by Trafalgar (21 days).
Hotel location: Outskirt of city, with Chinese and Japanese restaurant closeby, and a parking lot (2 pound sterling per day).
Hotel amenities: Small lobby and restaurant, wake-up call.
Room amenities: Clean room and beds, oak wood headboard and furnitue, basic furnishings, Wi-fi internet connection, TV, telephone, kettle for boiling water, complimentary coffee & tea supply, iron & ironing board, basic bathroom (no bath tub), strong water pressure, had to request bathroom cups, hand towels and tissue paper from the front desk, hair dryer. While the hotel claims its tap water is safe to drink, we boiled it first before drinking.
Electric voltage: 220V, which requires adapter & converter for North American 110V personal appliances. However, there's a 115V outlet marked "For shaver only" in the bathroom. I managed to recharge my 110V electric shaver and double A rechargeable batteries for my digital camera using this outlet without using an adapter & converter.
Personal comment: Even if the hotel has passed the criteria of Trafalgar to select this hotel for its very popular Britain and Ireland Explorer cost saver guided tour, the hotel amenities, even for travelling group, remains much to be desired.

Dear RomeoFernandez

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. You have managed to capture the majority of our facilities, however I should like to correct you on the car parking as I feel this is a bit misleading. The car parking lot to which you refer for £2 a day has nothing to do with the hotel and is out with our car park perimeter. Our car park is complimentary to all our guests and located in the hotel grounds and controlled by a security barrier and CCTV.

I should also like to highlight other facilities that you have missed out are:

Complimentary daily newspapers in the public areas of the hotel.
Complimentary shoe shine facilities.
Although you have mentioned Wi-Fi throughout the hotel I should like to note that this is complimentary to all.
Air conditioning in every room.
We supply bath towels to every room and have a supply of hand towels at reception on request.
FREE car parking.
Bar and separate restaurant.
Lifts to all rooms.
Daily housekeeping service.
Five meeting rooms.

We are a budget hotel and have an extremely strong and regular group market during March-September. This has been built up over many years and we generally take care of two groups a day during the peak times to good affect. Combine this with extremely great value for money and friendly, helpful and courteous service goes some way in ensuring that we maintain this important segment of our business.

I am a bit confused with your personal comment, but would be delighted to discuss this further with you if you could furnish me with further details at glasgow@campanile.com.
