“Nice hotel - friendly staff”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

My experience at the Menzies was very nice. Everyone was friendly and the room was comfortable. The only drawback was that the location was neither near the trainstation (that we came in on or where the majority of the restaurants were. The west end seems to be where the locals go and it was a bit of a cab ride away.... lots of empty storefronts close to the hotel.

Staff and location were excellent.
Rooms require updating
Big draw back is no outside sitting area, it was hot for the four days at the hotel but had to stay indoors.
There was seven for a Saturday night evening meal in the hotel with six different choice main course, all said meal was just passable, not to four star rating.

Room Tip: Go for the suites, other rooms too small

As a regular international traveller, I am really disappointed to be writing my most critical review of a "local" Scottish hotel!
I booked a spa day break, to include use of the leisure facilities, as well as beauty treatments in the privately run beautician.
Hotel on arrival looks a little tired, but looks are deceiving. We were very warmly welcomed both by the leisure staff, and the beauty staff. Changing facilities are dated and really could do with a scrub - they were clean, but just looked grubby and tired.
We ordered a bar lunch - service was slow, with a 45 min wait for food, but this wasn't a problem as it was delicious.
The real issue is the unbearable heat in the leisure facility. We had three hours of relaxation planned for by the pool. Within 2 minutes, we realised it was so hot that we couldn't stay. I asked receptionist to turn down the heat - he tried, but said he couldn't, and wasn't allowed to open a door. I asked to,see the duty manager, who said they had problems all day. A temperature probe was showing a room temp of 38C with air vents pumping in 46C! He was unable to offer a refund, or an alternative day. He called his Manager, who was the rudest individual I have ever met working in the service industry. I am amazed that he has any staff who will work for him, let alone any guest who would return.
After a very long, uncomfortable and intimidating period, I was able to obtain a refund from the company we booked with.
My advice - go somewhere else unless to want to cook. Even with mostly good staff, and amazing food, there is no customer service here. Not a relaxing break at all.

Dear Vicky H,

Thank you for placing your review on Trip advisor in relation to your recent booking via Itison for a Spa package with Savannah. I was very concerned to read your feedback in relation to poolside and have further investigated your comments.

I would like to apologise for the poolside temperature and that it had not being not picked up prior to you utilizing the club. Unfortunately, it does appear that our equipment that regulates the air temperature had failed that morning and to make matters worse the temperature outside reached 23.5% for the first time in months. I can confirm this is all repaired and working.

I believe that you highlighted this to the Waves team and at first they thought the rise was due to the weather and requested they check the temperatures from the ducts and thank you for doing this. It was at this point you requested to see the Duty Manager who from speaking to him did his best and contacted our maintenance team to investigate. It was at this point that you started to demand a full refund for the treatments, also not wanting to pay for lunch and speak the General Manger etc. I am sorry that I was not in the hotel at the time and my Operations Manager came to speak to you. I note that he asked to speak to you away from other guests and asked what he could do to help. He received tirade of loud abuse, threatening him with reporting the hotel to various associations and that you would be placing a review on tripadvisor and any other source you could and that you were only interested in a full refund. His only mistake was to say that he did not react well to being threatened and was trying to help to which you promptly walked out and left a food tab with lunch and wines outstanding. Whilst I totally understand your frustration, to say that we are not helpful is not accurate. We tried to do all we could under the circumstances it does seem your mind was made up on the course of action you were going to take. On a positive note thank you for kind praise for the food and the team at the hotel.

Philip

Stayed for weekend as birthday treat for my son. Had a split level apartment and loved it. It was so spacious and mini bar treats went down well. Everything replenished daily, clean, quiet and huge comfy bed. The reception staff were excellent in everyway, nothing a problem. They put a delicious chocolate birthday cake in room as asked and my son was over the moon to find a huge 7 birthday balloon, card and present courtesy of the staff. Thats what I call making your guests feel special! Infact every member of staff made our stay most memorable and made sure we had everything we needed. Had dinner in main restaurant and food was very good on the first night. At breakfast they had plenty of choice. It has a lovely pool which is nice and clean, also cheap secure parking opp hotel. The city centre walking distance as are mainy other attractions. I would never stay anywhere else in Glasgow and you would find it hard to get such hard working brilliant staff...they really look after kids with a goodie bag free juice and ice cream throughout stay etc. Well done again Menzies, cant wait to return later in the year! It is well worth getting an apartment they def have the wow factor.

Room Tip: new york style apartments a must

Stayed here for three nights, my husband, myself, and our two kids. Overall a great stay. The room was quite large, clean, and well equipped, the hot chocolate on the tea tray was a nice touch! Only downside was that it was difficult to get the room temperature adjusted - thermostat didn't seem to work, so it was either heater full blast or air conditioning full blast (eventually worked it out). Highlight was the staff - very friendly, professional but down to earth, and helpful. They were great with the kids, and there is a great "kids check in" upon arrival, and the kids received a bracelet that allowed them to come to the reception desk at any time during our stay and get a free juice, as well as to get a free ice cream one time - and staff were always very cheerful when the kids came to ask. Great pool - large, clean, with hot tub, steam room and sauna. Did not eat at restaurant, did have a light meal in pub one evening - the server was great, but the meals were just mediocre and slow in arriving, and we found not good value for the portions. Location is not in the nicest area of town, but there are several large chain hotels there, and it's very convenient to the expressway if driving, as well as being a 10 min walk to George Square area, etc. Would certainly stay here again.
