Owner description: The Necropolis, Glasgow's Victorian City of the Dead, is a vast and grand cemetery modeled on Père-Lachaise in Paris. Described as one of the most significant cemeteries in Europe, it is a major visitor attraction and patrolled by Park Rangers. Heritage Trail maps are available to guide the visitor to the memorials and tombs of some of Glasgow's most eminent citizens.

First time I was here was a ghost walk. The ghost walk its self left something to be desired but it did tell me some very interesting things about the people buried here. The second time I went I was leading a group of children doing the topic "Divided City". Seems strange but some of these kids from Lanarkshire had never been to Glasgow, had never seen the M8. The Necropolis provides great views of the city itself, some of the major scenes in the book, and of course the M8 its self was visable. The carvings on teh stones were excellent and many allowed me to weave tales around them to entertain/ educate the children. Its nto some place I would choose to spend a lot of time simply because of what it is, a graveyard but it is very beautiful and extremely interesting

The walk from Glasgow City centre to the Necropolis is fairly uninspiring, but when you get to the Cathedral and the Necropolis, the walk will seem well worth it. The Necropolis is located behind the Cathedral on the side and top of a hill. The hill is completely covered in old graves and tombs from the Victorian period, and very atmospheric. The views over Glasgow and surrounding hinterland are beautiful and on a sunny day, you can see from miles. It is well worth a visit to look at these beautiful and extravagant graves from a time gone by!

Very intersting enormous Victorian graveyard on a steep hill at the back of the Cathedral. Best visited on a dry day with the map available from the Cathedral. Very well kept and fascinating historical venue

If you like visiting cemeteries etc as a source of social history then this one is worth a visit. A nice walk from downtown finds you on a hill overlooking Glasgow (and unfortunately, or perhaps not, Tennents Brewery). Some interesting tombs and a nice way to spend an hour in the fresh air.
