Owner description: The Necropolis, Glasgow's Victorian City of the Dead, is a vast and grand cemetery modeled on Père-Lachaise in Paris. Described as one of the most significant cemeteries in Europe, it is a major visitor attraction and patrolled by Park Rangers. Heritage Trail maps are available to guide the visitor to the memorials and tombs of some of Glasgow's most eminent citizens.

The Necropolis is located next to the Glasgow Cathedral on a hill overlooking the center of Glasgow. The Necropolis is a vast, well maintained cemetery with large monuments built for wealthy people of years gone by. The word Necropolis literally means “city of the dead”.

After crossing an old foot bridge near the Cathedral I entered the cemetery and started my own self guided tour of the monuments on the cemetery’s hill. From the hill you have a great view of parts of the city and can also see how big the cemetery really is. I did not have any literature on the Necropolis so just walked around and read plaques on the bigger monuments. On organization called The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis offer free tours and I wish I had the time to do that (I will definitely do that on my next visit). The tours are free but they accept donations. There is no fee to visit the Necropolis.

If you are visiting Glasgow I recommend that you visit this beautiful old graveyard.

You may or may not think it a little morbid to go walking around a cemetery, but it really is a beautiful spot high up on a hill overlooking Glasgow and the old Cathedral. Beautiful, clean, and peaceful.

What an amazing site. Walking among the old headstones, reading them, really gave you a feel for the history of Glasgow.

Always wanted to visit the Necropolis having seen it many a time on Taggart. The area is huge and hilly so lots of walking involved. It's very interesting from a photographic perspective and just to read the inscriptions plus you'll get great views over city. This was built to impress the living but the state of some graves and monuments shows that fame is short lived. Get off at stop 2 on the city sightseeing tour for the Necropolis and look round the cathedral and buildings aswell.
