“Friendly Hotel with Lively Bar/Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2013

We visited Glasgow for the Celtic Connections festival and this hotel was in a good location to get to venues and explore Glasgow. The room was very compact and a little shabby but had everything we needed. As other reviewers have said, the best thing about this hotel is the brutti ma buoni bar which is popular with locals as well, very lively and friendly and the food was good and reasonably priced. We stayed on the third floor and weren't disturbed by the noise from the bar as other visitors were

Room Tip: HIgher floors are quieter, there is a lift.

Perfect location and couldn't ask for a better experience. We had a drink with the owner on the night of our stay and the next morning and the Craic was 90! The food was fantastic and there was a wide range of drinks available! Just a really nice, convenient place to stay.

I really wanteds to like the Brunswick hotel as it is a small independent venture, however I have little positive to say about it. The room was cheap at 40 pounds per night and the location is excellent. Also the staff were polite and the breakfast was ok. However, our room on the first floor was above the bar, which is above the nightclub. On the thursday night it was noisey but just about tolerable and I could get to sleep. On the Saturday night it actually hurt my ears how loud the music was. The furniture literally rattled because of the basey music. I complained to reception who explained that the bar would close at midnight and it should get better then as only the night club was open. After midnight it was still incredibly loud and after complaining again I was moved to the top floor which was nice and quiet. I was assured that there were no parties the following (sat) night. However Saturday was the same, if not worse. I simply cannot explain in words just HOW loud it was. We complained but the person on reception said the hotel was fully booked so we could not move rooms. at around 12:30 AM I found a different member of staff who said the hotel was not fully booked and moved us to the top floor again. The cleanliness also left a lot to be desired and only one of the beds was made up. The floor was dirty too. I would not stay there again if I were paid to. I really do not understand how the owners could think it appropriate to let a hotel room out above an incredibly loud sound system... I'm REALLY angry about it actually.

Room Tip: If you are not on the top floor you WILL be kept awake at night.

You know how you wish you're favourite bar had rooms so you could just head straight to bed when it closed? Well "Ta-daa". A very Spanish style of decor means the corridors are painted in dark gloss reds and blues but the room was lovely, if a little worn, and there was everything you'd expect in an expensive hotel for half the price: free wifi, good toiletries, iron and board, extra towels, bath and shower. And very comfortable bed. Staff were all very lovely and it's in a great location on a quiet street but still close to the busy, eclectic bars and restaurants of City. The lively ground floor café bar serves great beer and food so you may not need to stray too far!

As mentioned in previous reviews the staff are lovely and very helpful. The decor in the stairwell and corridor is horrible, however once you get into the room, it's actually alright. We had a compact double which is definetly compact, but there is everything you could need for a short stay including an iron and ironing board. Our room faced out into the street, which was totally fine and was quiet for a saturday night. The room was nice and clean and well thought out considering the amount of space. The shower is really good and powerful and bed comfy. Times for breakfast are really good, between 7 and 10, which is helpful if you've just had a night out, not too early. This place was just what we needed for a night out and really great value at round about the same price as a taxi home. There are loads of brilliant bars and restaurants in this area of the city which means you don't really have to go too far from the hotel for a quality night out.

Room Tip: Spend extra for a bigger room.

Stayed here for 2 nights over New Year 2012. The reception staff were extremely friendly and courteous and the staff in the adjoining restaurant and bar couldn't be faulted either but I'm really undecided about the accommodation. As other reviewers have mentioned, the corridors and stairs are painted a horrible dark red colour which gives it a bit of a brothel feel (not that I've been in one, I can only imagine!). Our room was spacious enough but had a 'tired' feel about it. There was a chunk out of the wall where someone had obviously banged a case or something into it and the curtains had some very dubious looking brown stains on them, and the carpet was heavily marked also. The bedding looked ok but the headboard had dirty marks on it too.
The Brunswick was simply somewhere to rest our heads at the end of the day and we didn't spend a considerable amount of time in our room so I was willing to overlook the curtains and carpet especially as the bathroom was clean and the shower hot and powerful. Probably wouldn't stay there again though. Have to admit, the location is A1.

Staff in the hotel are much friendlier than other hotels closeby in Glasgow, where other colleagues were staying.
I like to stay in independent hotels when I can, compared to the blandness of other places such as premier inn etc. The rooms probably need a lick of paint soon before they get too stale, but all the same I like the place. The friendly and helpful staff more than make up for a bit of chipped paint.
The location is very central, but away from the main street hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: Probably quieter if you ask for a room at the back
