Cathedral House Hotel
Ranked #79 of 93 Hotels in Glasgow

Just returned from a 2 day visit to Cathedral House Hotel in Glasgow. This hotel is in a marvellous location as it is central for shopping with Argyle street less than 15mins walk away. Buchanan galleries and Sauchiehall Street the same distance. For site seeing the Cathedral, the museum of religious art and the oldest house in Glasgow are on it's doorstep as well as a beautiful little park.
The staff are warm and welcoming and the food was excellent . The Hotel itself was old worldly with a spiral staircase . Our room was bright, warm and welcoming with fluffy white towels and pure white bed linen.
It is a bit of a work in progress as the new owner has only had it 18months. We bit rough around the corners but still a quant pleasurable place to stay and I would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel

Room Tip: The Cathedral room has lovely views

I purchased a voucher from 'groupon' as a treat for my mum & dad to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Really wish i never bothered!! Shoddy service & bland tasteless food that would'nt have filled a mouse let alone an adult. The ''soup'' i had was literally 3 spoonfuls & as for the joke which was meant to be ''Sunday roast''....... Im actually lost for words!! Our portion sizes were 1/2 the size of the other customers who had ordered the same meals as us. Our table was never approached once during the meal to ask if everything was ok. I am very disappointed not only on the food, but also the very poor treatment!! When customers purchase a voucher from ''groupon'' from this place, it should state clearly that the food will only be 1/2 warm, 1/2 portion size & 1/2 the service.....DISGRACE.... Ive had better food from FARMFOODS & better service!!!

Stayed here 2/5/14 for one night in room 7. Great little hotel within walking distance of the city centre, however they need to work on the menu and meals.

First impressions, the hotel is quirky with character, we were meet by a friendly receptionist who checked us in promptly and took our bags as room was not ready yet. When we returned, they offered to take our bags to the room as we we're on the top floor and not lift available.

The room was nice and bright with an outlook to the Cathedral, Necropolis and the East side of Glasgow. Bathroom was spacious however water pressure was low and trying to get hot water was hard work!

We stayed on a voucher offered via Amazon Local, that offered dinner, bed and breakfast, however the meals offered did not match that of the menu on the web site.

Evening meal - we opted for lentil soup - cold and flavourless, and 8oz sirloin - when served was overcooked and cold, these were returned and remade, when returned they were slightly better but still not right. The cut of meat was cheep and tasteless.

Breakfast - cereal was avail along with concentrated fruit juice and a cooked breakfast. Very nice however with no menu available was difficult to tell what was available - relied on chef / waiter to tell.

Raised concern when checking out and rec'd apology and would raise.

All in all a nice wee hotel just outside the hustle of the city, but close enough to walk to Merchant City or George Square if wished (taxi probably £5) each way.

Tip for hotel - make it more personal and improve the quality of food available.

Would stay again, but need convinced menu / food had been improved.

This hotel looked promising both from its website and from the outside. Unfortunately things went downhill as soon as we entered. We had booked a double room but were informed this was not available and just a twin available. It turned out to be 2 flights up a scruffy stairwell. The room itself was shabby and the bathroom small and grubby. The worst bit however was the overwhelming stench of stale chip fat pervading the room. The beds were comfy and linen clean but that is the only positive. Our dinner was served in the busily bar area and was extremely mediocre. Breakfast next morning was served with a minimum of service and was swimming in grease.
All in all we were happy to leave and will not be returning.
It is a shame as the building has great potential and is in a good spot but it needs a lot of work to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

Have been at this hotel twice before and bought another voucher because we enjoyed our meal and the ambiance of the hotel. However what a disappointment this was. We were given a choice of lamb shank or fish and chips, soup or pate. The fish was a small piece of frozen fish with about 6 chunky chips and tartare sauce - nothing else. The starter was a very thin slice of pate four grapes, small portion of chutney and oatcakes. Very disappointing especially as the voucher had a picture of roast beef and it was advertised as a Sunday lunch. If this had been my first visit I would not have returned.

Room Tip: did not stay in hotel - after reading reviews I don't think I will be in the future. The Hotel...

Terrible. Service terrible, the menu is not as described on their web site. You have a choice of 2 starters & 2 main courses a tiny frozen fish greasy soggy chips, no peas. Or braised steak with pots & veg no Yorkshire pudding, certainly not as described on the web page. We CERTAINLY did in no way know we would be sitting in a public bar eating our non Sunday lunch, ! The soups & my daughters dinner went back untouched, no one asked if everything was ok, I have been overcharged for 2 desserts we didn't receive omg what a disaster we will NEVER return to this bar aka hotel restaurant for a non Sunday lunch.

Sort out the web site as it is very misleading

I agree with some of the points made by previous guests but not all. We went having read many reviews so were prepared for some of the problems we might face.5 star it's not but then neither is it a bland or corporate hotel where you are just a number to them. Beautiful old building in a lovely location but I could not have managed the three flights of spiral stairs with a suitcase. I struggled with a smaller case and feel there should be help offered. I did have a chuckle when the drawer under the wardrobe fell apart as did the headboard on my sister's bed but the room was spotless with very fresh bed linen and new towels and the beds were comfortable with good pillows. Very little noise even at the weekend with both windows open. Room 5 was a fair size and had lovely views of the gardens filled with cherry blossom trees and some of the beautiful historical surrounding buildings. The room had plenty powerpoints and good wifi connection. There was a good hairdryer and an ironing board but I assume you had to request an iron. Bathroom was fine with a good shower but the temperature of hot water varied. I did not enjoy my main dinner course of breaded goat's cheese. It seemed dry and too big to be thoroughly cooked but my sister enjoyed the steak pie and the homemade soup was lovely. The waitress was very friendly and helpful as were all the staff. Breakfast was lovely with the manager bending over backwards to accommodate all requests. Lovely selection of continental and cooked food and great to see milk, yoghurts and fruit juices kept chilled in the fridge. Fresh coffee was being brewed and could be served to us or we were free to help ourselves. The manager regaled us with the history of the hotel and surrounding places of interest.I also heard him making suggestions of places to visit to tourists . Very entertaining , typical Glasweigian sense of humour and very hard working . All staff took an interest in their guests and remembered where we were going and asked after our day. About a £4.00 taxi ride from Queen St and Buchanan St train and bus station. It is on the hop on hop off bus route with a stop right across from the hotel. A short walk to The Merchant City with fabulous bars and restaurants. We didn't have time to visit The Necropolis but enjoyed a visit to The St Mungo's Museum which is yards away with free entry. If you are tired of chain hotels and don't mind a bit of inconvenience in exchange for interested , helpful staff give this hotel a go. We enjoyed it and would be happy to return.

Room Tip: Our room 5 was fine with lovely views but can't do anything about the steep spiral stairs. defin...
