“Worst stay of my whole trip”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2011

What a shame this hotel is. Its location is excellent for the centre of Glasgow and could be so much better. Worn out bare carpets, windows that rattle and the place is just so noisy. To sum up this place in 1 word - dirty!

Stay here for 2 nights in mid Nov. You know that it's an old building, but that's alright, given it's only 40 pounds a night. I was luckily to be given a spacious double room with clean and bright, big toilet. Nice and friendly staffs in the reception. The hot breakfast has scramble egg, bacon, sausage, black budding, mushrooms, baked beans and haggis, which is much better than what i thought. The drawback is that is located directly above the subway, so would be quite noisy until late nite and from the morning.

Oh Dear. Front desk kept me waiting for quite a while, and they were clearly harassed. I was given my room number, but twhen I got there the room hadn't been serviced at all- the sheets remained unchanged. They sent someone to do that staight away, but whilst I was waiting, in the bar, other guests were trying to get a drink, but the bar would only take cash- no signing to rooms, no cards. Rather restrictive.
The room was 'no frills' , but lacked cleaning- the space between the bed and the bedside table was filthy. No excuse for that!
The window looked out over a condemned building, and razor wire. I kept the curtains shut in preference!
At 5 a.m drilling started somewhere- but this was just a wake up call before the trains started rumbling under the hotel, so no futher sleep possible.
At some point this hotel has been a lovely little place in the absolute heart of the city- incredibly convenient- but goodness, it looks and feels utterly unloved.

Good hotel for short stop overs. Hotel is right by the underground and the entrance to Queen street station. (Ideal for trains to the Highlands.) It is also only a short walk from Glasgow Central.
The staff are friendly and helpful.
The hotel itself is in need of updating. Furnishings are old and carpets thread bare in places. The plumbing is very noisy at night. Bedrooms on the front are rather noisy from street below.

Booked this room for one night---room was dirty, VERY noisy, no security whatsoever--people not
staying at the hotel coming in and out of the lobby---actually had to leave and find another
hotel as the room was directly at street level. On a Friday night in Glascow this translates into
drunken people walking directly underneath the window all night and nearby pub noise as well.
Unless you are ABSOLUTELY desperate to save some money--do NOT stay at this hotel!!!!!

Friendly, helpful staff: the kettle in my room wasn't working, so they found a brand new kettle for me.
The room was a good size, with plenty of room around the bed. The bathroom was also a good size: you need to heed the warning to close the bathroom door or the steam will set off the fire alarm.
Breakfast offered a wide variety to choose from, including haggis. Although we didn't eat supper there, the menu seemed healthy, down-to-earth and reasonably priced.
It is extremely well located being just a five minute walk from Queens Street Station, and a bit further from Glasgow Central Station. There's an underground station just a few steps away.
It's located in a pedestrianised road which has all the modern chain stores that you'd find in Oxford Street London, plus plenty of others, but with the benefit of having no traffic. Food wise, Pret a Manger type outlets abound. The Willow Tea Room is close by, but has been revamped since I last visited and is now a bit disappointingly plain. The Glasgow Museum of Modern Art is also close by, but it too has been radically changed in that the wonderful art that used to be displayed there has been removed and replaced by dreary avant gard stuff.

If you're looking for something plain, honest and convenient, I recommend this hotel as good value for money.
