The deal for a Club Room with balcony, breakfast and dinner should have been good but the quality of the dinner and breakfast were poor. Our experience of the hotel before arriving was excellent. reception dealt with a change of date request and upgraded our room for free. Great start!
On arrival the hotel, beyond reception, has an air of faded grandeur. Our room (509) was good, clean, very spacious with a comfortable bed and included a small amount og gin, whisky and vodka in decanters. there was a complimentary mini bar with 1 small red wine and 1 small white, bottled water and 2 small tins of lemonade, tonic coke and bottled water . Good size bathroom but the shower was poor (over bath, little power)
It reall y all went wrong at dinner. Roof top not something the Windows restaurant should be over playing. It looks at offices and a church. My special (off menu and planned several days in advance) was good, my partners from the a la carte (you pay extra for going a la carte) was very poor. A cold lamb ravioli starter (on cold plates) and a very poor quality steak (8oz rib eye at £22 was chuck and incinerated). This really took the edge off the planned romantic evening.
Breakfast was no better - eggs hollandaise was served cold, not warm (again on a cold plate).
Issues for both meals were highlighted to the restaurant and at reception but were met with unconvincing apologies and no real effort to recompense. By comparison we ate lunch the following day at the Grill Room on the Square - wonderful and highly recommended for service and food. Fantastic steaks and a level the Carlton George will not meet with the current kitchen.
All in all, a good deal for decent rooms right in the centre of town and with executive lounge access and the free mini bar it certainly helps with value... but don't eat here.
