“Not particularly central and getting a bit tired”
Reviewed January 12, 2009

This is the old 'Moathouse' that some years ago changed into the 'Crowne Plaza' franchise. The foyer is getting a bit tired, our room was rather small for a Crowne Plaza and the in-room entertainment system was definitely getting on a bit, but staff was friendly, price was ok and the room was nice and quiet.

As a family we have stayed here on a number of occasions but i must say our recent trip was very dissapointing. We ordered a meal before going to a show in the SECC, however after an hour and our children having received their meal we are still waiting on ours!!!

The bar staff was most apologetic and embaressed and gave us a discount on our drink.

The rooms as always were imaculate as usual.

The only other complaint we had wasthe pool was so cold my children couldn't even go in to it.

The hotel was very modern, the rooms were beautiful and very comfortable loved the beds!! The staff on reception were very friendly and the pool was a brilliant way to relax at the end of the day, the hotel was very busy with christmas dinners but had a brillant atmosphere. Myself and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel for our anniversary. When we got to the hotel we were very impressed by the way it looked. The reception was very clean with lovely christmas decorations which made it very cosy. The girl on reception was very polite and welcoming when we first arrived. We had to pay £5 to park which I thought was a bit steep for residents but at least we knew our car would be safe.Check in was very fast and we got asked if we would like our bags carried up to our room which was a nice touch. The room itself was so cosy and warm and a perfect size.(room 1011)We had a great view over the river and the SECC and the bed was huge!!. We made use of the leisure facilites which was nice for a relaxing day although the jacuzzi wasnt open due to the water being too cold.(bit disappointing as I was looking forward to sitting in that and relaxing for a while). In the evening we went into town which cost £5 in a taxi.We had dinner at Di Maggios restaurant which was amazing(definately recommend it). Breakfast in the morning was a buffet which was very tasty and fills you up for the day.Check it wasnt until 12 so we didnt have to rush out of the room.Overall a great stay at the Crown Plaza:D

The hotel itself is very clean, the staff are friendly, the rooms are clean and well presented. They do have problems that seem very common in a lot of larger, chain hotels. The sealed windows and noisy air conditioning in rooms make for sleepless nights of excessive heat or cold. The bar and bar food are very overpriced, and a single business traveller is unlikely to want make the taxi trip in to town to seek out anything else. The internet charges are unacceptable - sixty pounds for internet access for a five night stay is a huge rip off, when most other chains are able to provide free wireless access.

Though I should appreciate the exercise in always using the stairs, the lack of lifts is quite a problem. The middle one has been out of order since I first stayed here in October.

Thankyou for your review.
I am pleased to confirm that due to previous feedback, we have been involved with renegotiatios with the current internet supplier and that positive changes in prices will be announced in early january.
I am sorry that you found the situation with the lifts inconvenient. As you will be aware, we are currently undertaking an extensive refurbishment programme on all the lifts which ,unfortunately has necessitated lift no.2 being closed off for a lenghty period. The other two passenger lifts are still fully operational and we have put directional signage in place suggesting guests use our 3 service lifts in times of high demand. Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights to go to the Status ~Quo concert at the secc. As all the other reviews say it is so handy for the secc. It is also good to be able to get the train from the sation beside the secc to go into city centre. On the first night of our stay we had booked a table in the hotel restaurant. As we had expected it was a carvery but we were also offered an a la carte menu which we would have preferred. When asked we specifed to the waitress that we wanted to order from the a la carte menu. She then disappeared! After 25 minutes no had even came back to take a drinks order from us! We dceided then it just seemed simpler to go for the carvery which was ok as far as carverys go, if you like that sort of thing! I then had to go and find someone and ask for our drinks order to be taken! The impression given seems to be it is less trouble for staff if you just go for the carvery. We would actually have spent a lot more money if we had got the opportunity to order from the menu and we would have got more drinks as well! Bad bad service from a 4 star hotel. I have stayed in many many hotels and have never experienced such bad service. Over all this is a good clean hotel with nicley furnished rooms. Our room on the first floor overlooked the carpark so we didnt experience any of the good views other people have described. The breakfast was of very good quality but we were mindfull to watch out for someone and ask for our tea and coffee. Other people were not so lucky!

  • Liked — The cleanliness and furnsihing of the rooms
  • Disliked — The restaurant sevice

We stayed at this hotel while attending a concert in the SECC.
We decided to stay here due to its proximity (via covered walkway)
to the arena.
The Positives.. Clean , comfortable, modern room
No need to venture outside in the cold December
weather to get to concert.
Good breakfast

The Negaitives.. Public areas look tired and a bit scruffy
Bar food over priced and less than tasty

We got this hotel at a good price through Hotel Connexions. I would not be keen to pay more than I did for a night here but it is very handy for the SECC

Thankyou for posting a review. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. As you quite correctly point out we are extremely handy for the SECC, particularly as we have a direct link into the centre.

We are currently reviewing all our menus in the hotel so am I am particularly grateful for your comments regarding our Lounge Food.

I am sorry you found the decor in the public areas tired. Even though the entire hotel was refubished in 2005/6, we are already finalising plans to upgrade the bar and lounge areas again which we are confident will be carried out early 2009. Dominic McVey
