Owner description: The Tenement House provides a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century, in the faithfully restored four-room house lived in by Miss Agnes Toward for over half a century. See what it meant to be an 'independent woman' in the first half of the 20th century; experience how ordinary folk lived, and appreciate how many of the household amenities we now take for granted were considered luxuries less than a century ago. Authentic gas lighting has been installed to recreate the atmosphere of the house, which didn't have electric lighting until 1960. An exhibition on the ground floor makes the most of Miss Toward's extensive personal archive, providing a valuable time capsule for visitors today.

“Fascinating Step-Back in History”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

A gem of a place, preserving fascinating aspects of tenement life in early 20th century. It's like stepping back in time and re-living how our ancestors lived. The smell of gaslights in the hall lend a clever touch of the reality of a bygone era.

“interesting view of the past”
Reviewed April 5, 2014 via mobile

Not a huge property but full of interesting details about how life was lived in the past. There is an exhibition downstairs and then the four roomed tenement upstairs. There were two staff members upstairs to provide information. There were about 10 people in the property when we visited on a wet Saturday and no waiting. I think that at other times it could become overcrowded

Well worth a visit, frozen in time and gives a true glimpse of what life was like. We enjoyed our visit with our new National Trust memberships!

“Worth visiting if you are a NT member; otherwise, expensive”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

We enjoyed looking round the flat but hadn't appreciated at first that it was only four rooms. It was interesting but a very short experience for £6.50 per adult. I would only recommend going if you are a member of the National Trust and can get in for free.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

The tenement is worth a visit, as everything still in place when the occupier lived there, before being hospitalised, but sadly never returned to. A bit of a hike to get there as not well signposted (something the trust are trying to get the council to alter) but really nice people welcome you in, and show you around, worth a visit
