Owner description: The Tenement House provides a rare glimpse into life in Glasgow in the early 20th century, in the faithfully restored four-room house lived in by Miss Agnes Toward for over half a century. See what it meant to be an 'independent woman' in the first half of the 20th century; experience how ordinary folk lived, and appreciate how many of the household amenities we now take for granted were considered luxuries less than a century ago. Authentic gas lighting has been installed to recreate the atmosphere of the house, which didn't have electric lighting until 1960. An exhibition on the ground floor makes the most of Miss Toward's extensive personal archive, providing a valuable time capsule for visitors today.

Essentially untouched gem of a tenement flat sympathetically restored by the Scottish National Trust. Gas lighting, full kitchen range and beds in cupboards!

“Hidden history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013

Looks so unasuming from the exterior but it is like stepping back in time when you enter the front door. It's fantastic that it has been preserved so well. It reminded me of visits to my grandparents in the early 70s although they did have electricity!

Really good visit to a house that takes you back to another time, letters and exhibits really interesting although entrance price a wee bit too much

“Memories”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

Very interesting and brought back memories of grandmother's house where I was brought up. Very helpul guides. A lot of original items in house. Brochure available to purchase which has lot of details and also makes a nice souvenir. Quite near Sauchiehall Street but fairly steep hills depending on which route you take. Also stairs up to and inside tenement so not really suitable for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility

Really enjoyed this, I work in housing and found it to be very informative, I remembered my Grandma living in a single end so it was also nostalgic.
