Owner description: Self-guided walking tour maps are available from George Square Tourist Office of Merchant City, now a vibrant historic cafe quarter and designer-shopping mecca. Highlights of this tour, which dates back to medieval times, include the grand neo-classical halls and Georgian townhouses built for Glasgow's rich tobacco barons and shipping merchants.

In a former veg market, this setting was perfect for walking around, seeing craftspeople make and sell their wares, and at the same time, having either a meal or just a few beers. Just a few blocks from Buchanan Street, it is a neat place to spend a little time in.

We came upon Merchant square a number of years ago. It was a weekday afternoon in autumn/winter and we loved it. The atmosphere was relaxed and felt very cosmopolitan. Just the place to sit and have a glass of wine, watching the world go by. Diverse in food and drink options. So impressed were we that we brought friends along this weekend (December 7th). The noise!!!! It was evening time and the place was buzzing.......fine for the younger generation, but for us 50 something's.......? We will go back but not at night.

It's a really happening place. Enjoyed shopping here. There are many good restaurants around. There are many good Indian restaurants as well. Had a good time with my friends! Nice place.

As a Scot who has lived in England for a long time my experience of nights out in Glasgow are pretty limited now.
When I do go out during visits it invariably ends up in the Merchant City area.
Old warehouses and commercial buildings which have been very tastefully renovated into an area full of atmosphere and variety. Great bars and restaurants as well as very interesting Architecture. You will have a great day or night out around here. For me it has a kind of Covent Garden feel about it.
Go and see for yourself.
