The house was built in the seventies to a design by CRMackintosh.
The rooms are a must to see if you are a fan.
The cafe is delightful with lovely helpful staff.
The menu, which is updated every so often offers choices for larger and smaller appetites.
I had gorgeous fish cakes with garlic mayonnaise and salad plus crushed potatoes.
The latter was so generous that my husband had to ‘help me out’!
He had polished off a large dish of beautifully cooked smoked trout with pasta.
We simply couldn’t resist puddings He had cheesecake and I managed to almost finish a very generous portion of three scoops of very good ice cream
The wine list offers a tempting choice so I succumbed to a glass of cabinet rose which was excellent. My husband enjoyed an alcohol free beer
The cafe is obviously a destination choice for many locals, always a good sign.
They offer great coffee, including a decaf choice, plus a choice of teas, again including green tea which should suit all tastes.
Many come for morning coffee and many for the superb looking cream teas.
Customers of all ages obviously enjoy this lovely place.
We always book in when we come up from Dorset each year en route to a stay in Perthshire.(and on our return journey). It is a wonderful part of our Scottish holiday and we love it!

I have written several reviews about this place over the past 2-3 years because every time I come its really good – food/service ambience etc.
This time I went upstairs to visit the House with the audio hand guide and found it thoroughly fascinating (the audio guide really helps and its included in the price) – to my shame its taken me 4-5 visits to do this – but I highly recommend.
Keep up the good work and hopefully see you again soon.

Mcqueen have ate at this restaurant many times always enjoyed it except for the Christmas period
This was a birthday lunch mine my choice was my fault didn't particularly enjoy it sea trout with
Bulgar wheat samphire and mussel sauce thought the sauce was bland samphire needed slightly more cooking
Desert salted caramel pannacotta with ginger cake & pistachio crumb
Ginger care tasted as if a week old bone dry the Dish needed a sauce
But the toilets are badly needing an upgrade toilet seatseat hanging loose generally looking shabby
Get your act together art house cafe have always enjoyed my visit but you need to start spending some money on your facilities I cannot be the only one who notices the fall in standards of facilities and food

Hi Moira,

Thank you very much for your feedback, we are sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your recent lunch with us, especially as it was a Birthday celebration. You mentioned that you found that main course bland and an element of the dessert dry. We can assure you that all our food is freshly prepared daily, including our sauces and desserts. Panna cotta is itself a creamy dessert so the ginger cake and crumb within the dish are intended to give some texture, but we will certainly take your feedback on board.

We do however find your last paragraph very unfair, while there may have been a loose toilet seat our facilities are actually painted and refreshed on a regular basis. To state that there has been a fall in standards throughout on this basis is a misleading at best, especially given the continual investment in the building.

We do appreciate all customers taking the time to let us know about their experience, and although we prefer direct contact (phone/face to face) where possible we will certainly take value from any relevant points raised.

Kind Regards,

Lynn

Nice restaurant although a bit pricey, the House itself was a bit disappointing expected more Mackintosh features and upstairs seems to be used mainly by students of architecture

Many thanks for visiting and for taking the time to comment. There are several rooms as part of the Mackintosh Exhibition and while we do occasionally have student groups at the house the majority of our visitors are individuals interested in Architecture, Art, design and of course Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We are sorry if you felt there was not much to see, the rooms have been recreated/ interpreted from the drawings that Charles & Margaret created.

Many Thanks,

Lynn

This is a great lunch venue set in beautiful grounds and gardens. Coupled with Pollock Country Park it makes a great combination of see and enjoy on the south side of the city.
