“Huge room and great ambiance”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

My husband and I spent the nights of July 15, 16 and 17 here, and couldn't have been more pleased with the Scottish ambiance and service. The bellmen/concierges wore kilts and were very knowledgable about where to go and what to do in Glasgow. We stayed in room #53 (Geoff Merrill) which was huge! It has a large bathroom, separate tub in an alcove near the windows, king bed, a separate sitting area by the TV with sofa and chairs, desk, and loads of walk around room. There are plenty of drawers and hanging space. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Please note that there are no elevators, and because the hotel consists of several attached homes, it was a hike from the lobby to our room, on an upper level -- but we knew this in advance. There could have been a bit better lighting next to the bed. The hotel is in a residential area, near the Glasgow Botanic Gardens, but there are a few restaurants nearby, and we enjoyed walking each morning a few blocks to the bus stop. The hotel seemed to have a lot of business people there, who met in the various lounges. If I returned to Glasgow, I would try to stay closer to the city center, but the Hotel du Vin was a good choice for this first visit.

Room Tip: For loads of space and quiet, Room #53 -- Geoff Merrill -- was perfect.

My wife and I spent one night here after flying in from the US. They were very accommodating in helping us to get into a room earlier than they had to. Also, their bellman was very helpful in recommending things that we could do that were walking distance from the hotel. The room was large and very nice. Our problems were that finding parking for the hotel was difficult, and the access to the hotel wasn't obvious our first time there. Also, although there is some shopping nearby, it is not centrally located and is about a 15 minute drive to the central district. Our biggest problem was that there was suppose to be Internet, but they had a problem with their system so that we could not access it and their guest computer couldn't access it. It was not available either day we were there.

Imagine a stately town house block transformed into a boutique hotel with rooms named after world famous wineries.Rooms were spacious and tasefully decorated. Breakfast was included and very good. Eggs Benedict a must. Staff very attentive. The wooden floors creaked which served to add an old world charm to the stay. Location was a little off the beaten path but by no means a deal breaker.

Room Tip: Higher floors could mean addtional schlepp with baggage.

This historical hotel was superb and a great value for the $. I got a room through a travel agency, so not sure if the price is the same booking directly through the hotel, but a 5 star hotel for a very reasonable price. History galore with huge spacious rooms and beautifully appointed bathroom with large soaking tub and rain head shower. Very comfortable. Staff were wonderful, especially David, the concierge who wore the traditional kilt and sash. Walking distance to the Glasgow Botanical garden which was a wonderful place for a walk. Restaurant was a little formal for my liking but the food (while not inexpensive) was wonderful. A delightful place to stay. There is no lift, so needed to have the staff bring the luggage to my room.

Room Tip: I doubt if there is a bad room in the hotel

We stayed one night after my sister's wedding, which was held in the Hotel. We had been looking forward to they stay, and had paid £295 for a "Grand room " and was charged another £40 for breakfast ! very pricey for what it was. We have been all over the world, and stayed in many hotels, and this one is NOT WORTH THE MONEY. We agree with the comments about dust, shabby faded curtains, and the bathroom in our room ( Geoff Morrell) was smelly with mould. The tiling grout was in need of repair, and the shower door stuck and closed over with a loud clang. All the pictures and lights on the walls were squint. The décor and ornaments were soulless. It needs a makeover, from someone with style. leather boxes as ornaments is BORING. Oh ! and there was a bottle of wine in the room which you could sample for the grand price of £19.50. ( merlot) It was rank, which we discovered AFTER we opened it, by this time too late. At these prices, the wine, and most certainly in this hotel ( clue's in the name after all !!) should be top notch. Will not be back, which is a huge disappointment for us, however, the wedding was fantastic.

Room Tip: book elsewhere and save your money.

I grew up in Glasgow, and longed to be able to stay in this hotel. It was one of the very few hotel disappointments I have had. The guy who carried our luggage was an absolute gentleman, no matter how much he gets paid, its not enough for lugging suitcases up and down those stairs.
This is not luxurious, its old and worn out and needs a good clean. I would not in a million years recommend this hotel to anyone, save your money and go to the Crowne Plaza!

Room Tip: Coose a room in another hotel
