“Getting there, but a little room for improvement.”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We booked this one night stay very last minute and were delighted to get the opportunity to visit Glasgow and stay at this particular hotel as we had stayed here several times in the past.

The booking was made on the internet and our party was listed as four adults on this particular last minute / late availability site we used. We were actually a family of four - mum, dad and a twenty plus a teen. The room we booked was a Deluxe Family room. No other details were provided other than it slept 4 adults. When we arrived we were seen quite promptly however our booking could not be tracked and as the young lady tried to solve the problem her supervisor gave her advice which failed to help. Eventually he took over as the crowd built up and it was very busy in the reception area.
It appeared that there was no booking "put through" for us although we were told that it was "there"! I knew that the thought of a family deluxe room was slipping from our grasp and I was correct! The supervisor explained that a family deluxe was not available and then added it would not be suitable as it consists of a double and a sofa bed. He then allocated us neighbouring rooms on the fourth floor . Rooms 405 and 407.Not deluxe!
On arriving at our rooms it was not good to see a used empty wine glass and tumbler on the floor at the door of room 407. On entering this room it was very disappointing to see that on the attic sloping ceiling which occupies 2/3 of the outside wall there was a large brown patch from some kind of leak! It must have been more that 30cm and very obvious. The towel rail in the bathroom was also very loose and although that sounds like a silly moan it quite clearly had been loose for sometime as there was a dusting of plaster dust on the floor. Room 405 was fine and much more pleasant for our younger family members. The information for visitors to the hotel and Glasgow was outstanding in quality and variety.
We did not complain as we were only in Glasgow for an evening and had to be somewhere promptly. Our focus was on our plans within Glasgow such as eating out, cinema etc. and we just wanted to get on with our plans.
Breakfast was absolutely brilliant! Staff amazing, welcoming and so friendly. The food was very fresh and a great variety with absolutely everything you would expect to find from a top standard hotel.
The hotel is simply renovated and it is good to see the preservation of many of the characteristics. More work continues and I hope that further investment improves experiences, such as my families.

Room Tip: If you book last minute and online - phone before you go to check your room has been allocated prior...

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay on Tripadvisor.

It was disappointing to read that there were some challenges on checking in; we would definitely recommend booking direct to avoid any confusion. The comments you have made regarding the room will be highlighted to the relevant departments as a matter of urgency.

Please do not hesitate to contact our in-house Reservation Team on 0141 240 3730 if you are planning any future visits.

Fantastic staff and incredible value for what was a lovely and luxurious room.

The hotel sits on top of the station, right in the heart of the city, which proved incredibly handy for not only small walks into the main shopping thoroughfare, Buchanan Street, but also for excursions to Dunoon.

The staff really made this stay special as they were friendly, knowledgeable and always eager to help (one man stopped to help me & my mum when he was off-duty).

I would thoroughly recommend the Grand Central Hotel to anyone visiting Glasgow

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper I would suggest asking for a room facing away from the busy street below

A striking and beautifully refurbished hotel. Great service and a warm welcome from friendly staff. This hotel is perfectly located for getting around Glasgow and the people who work here seem to have a genuine pride in their hotel.

We stayed one night at this hotel. While a good location in downtown Glasgow and modern rooms and amenities, we had a terrible stay. When we got to our room, we found it to be large, spacious with high ceilings. When we opened the windows, we realized we were seeing directly INTO the Grand Central Station train station. Until 1am we heard all of the train station loudspeaker announcements and noises loud and clear. In addition, there was a wedding going on in the neighboring conference rooms. Loud thumping, nightclub music remained until 1am. We called the front desk and complained, but they stated they could not move our room and couldn't do anything about the wedding disco party. A terrible night without sleep and no earplugs. Would not recommend.

Thank you for your recent review on the Grand Central Hotel.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed our modern rooms and our good location. However it was disappointing to see that your stay was disrupted by noise.

If any guest is dissatisfied with their room allocation, the Front of House Team will do their very best to offer an alternative room. Please accept our apologies if this was not made available to you.

Our Guest Relations Manager will be in contact to discuss this further.

The checking in service for this hotel is very poor. We arrived on the Sunday at 2:00 following a flight into Glasgow. The rooms are not due to be ready until 3:00 which was not a problem. However the receptionist told us that there were wedding guests late leaving and the room would not be ready until about twenty minutes after 3:00. We said that was not a problem and would go for a walk. We returned at the time specified to be told the room was to ready and could we wait another twenty minutes. Another twenty minutes went by and the room was still not ready. The receptionist gave us a voucher for a free glass of champagne whilst we wait. This is something we didn't really want and just wanted to check into the room we booked. After another twenty minutes we were told the room was still not ready and could we wait another ten minutes as the room was being prepared. After ten minutes we were told the same. This went on until I complained to the duty manager. It was now 17:10. We had booked an executive twin room. The manager told us he would get the room sorted immediately. We were given a room. On entering the room, it was evident the room was a double with the double bed being un-clipped to make two singles. The beds did not line up with the head board feature on the wall and in fact the plug sockets were above our heads. The bedside table had been placed between the beds. The manager called to ask if everything was ok. I said to be honest I just want to settle in and I would contact the reception in the morning.

The following morning I went to reception to advise them of the room. I was told this was an executive twin and this is what we paid for. I said it wasn't and asked to speak to the manager and when the manager checked she said it wasn't and agreed it was a double room. She arranged very quickly a replacement room. This was much larger and set up as a twin but the beds still didn't line up with the head board feature on the wall. However the manager did refund us the first nights stay . We were there for four nights.

We weren't the only ones experiencing problems checking in. Would strongly recommend you check with the hotel if you are booking an executive twin as the brochure and the room do not look the same. Very similar but not the same.

The restaurant for breakfast is very small and the food serving area is not big enough to cope with the amount of people using it. The choice of food is very limited and does not reflect a good Scottish breakfast which you would expect being in Scotland.

Other than that the staff were very friendly and the hotel is very nice. Such a shame this hotel has these problems.

Room Tip: Check with the hotel what room you will get if selecting it from a brochure.

Stayed at the Grand Central in Glasgow and all in all we had lovely stay. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, meals were very good and our room was lovely. I did specifically ask for room 327 as this I was told was a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of the station which, some of the rooms looked onto and you could hear the train announcements. The corridors in the hotel were endless and seemed to go on for miles, so room 327 was a good choice as it was quiet and near the lift.

I would definitely go back there as it was so central to everything, so all in all a really good time was had.

Room Tip: As I have said in my post our room 327 was very good, but it seems that rooms with odd numbers were...
