Grand Central Hotel
Ranked #39 of 93 Hotels in Glasgow
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Stayed over night... Reception staff were excellent on check-in, and were very helpful and getting us a table at the very popular champagne bar. Room we had was well decorated, bed a little small, and no air conditioning in the room, so was a little uncomfortable...for night though this was ok. Would recommend for an excellent central location for all the city centre attractions.

Let's start with the good: the location is clearly very convenient, directly next to the train station especially if you are just in Glasgow overnight and taking a quick look around before travelling on by train. The rooms are spacious, and the staff seem nice enough.

Now the bad: rooms and corridors are very drab, bathroom nowhere near the standard you would expect, room has the most dismal view ever looking IN to the train station (which is also very loud) but most annoyingly, the internet connection is virtually unusable - and has to be reconnected every 30 mins (!) When I called reception to say the internet is unusable, the response was oh yes our complimentary internet is crap (so why insult your guests with it?) and if I wanted a decent internet connection I would have to pay £10 for a card. For a 4-star hotel to be charging for internet in 2013 is a travesty, and frankly I had no reason to believe my internet would be any better even if I paid up.

Can't possibly imagine there are not substantially better options nearby, as when I was strolling around the area there appeared to be a number of other nice looking hotels within one or two minutes walk.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with the TripAdvisor community.

It was disappointing that the hotel's internet provision and train station view marred your visit to Glasgow.

The Grand Central Hotel has a number of bedrooms which look into Glasgow's Central Station. These rooms are very popular with many of our visitors, but not to every guest's liking.
In the unlikely event that a guest is dissatisfied with their room allocation, the Front of House Team are always happy to offer an alternative. I do hope this option was made available to you.

The hotel's internet connection is currently being upgraded and we look forward to offering a higher bandwith, with unlimited access, in future.

My company take a table at a black tie dinner here every year and I book 10 rooms for clients and we are always very happy with the service and the hotel staff in general.

The hotel is finished off very nicely and has recently had some work carried out. Access straight into Central Station is also very handy for a Saturday morning return home.

Breakfast and food overall to a very high standard.

Just back from a fabulous time at the Grand Central. My daughter had booked a 'treat your mum' night away for my husband and I as a birthday surprise gift. When we arrived the manager 'Sandy' came over and wished me happy birthday and gave me a hug. He asked if there was anything at all they could do to improve my stay then just to ask. We were upgraded to a beautiful superior room and there was a birthday card from the hotel and a bag of home made tablet waiting for me. We had an afternoon tea included in our package which was delicious. Breakfast was lovely and the chef really funny and helpful. I have MS and he personally plated up my breakfast for me as I have a bit if a shaky hand. ( nothing to do with the champagne haha). I will definitely be back again, hopefully for the Xmas markets. If you want a top class hotel with friendly staff then visit the Grand Central x

This is the interesting kind of hotel you find in many city centres. I have stayed in similar in Manchester and London. It is an old, characterful building which has undergione a major refurbishment. The result is quality room furnishings in a wide variety in room sizes. We had a large, delightful room overlooking the.........station glass roof. Well. what do you expect for a city centre hotel? There was also a musty feel to various parts. But the location is great - very central for what is a great city to visit and explore. This review is a shame as the alternative is modern, glass and concrete, characterfree hotels!

The main disappointment was breakfast. Cool is putting it politely. Uninspiring for a 4star hotel. At least there was haggis!

Staff were friendly and helpful.

We traveled with our son so we got a suite, and i have to say it is the largest we've been in for, like, ever. The room has high ceiling so makes it even larger. The staffs are friendly and helpful, complimentary breakfast is very good (I tried the Haggis and found it very tasty!), and it is walking distance to city center and shopping area. And best of all, going thru the other door is the train station! You can't beat that! The only gripe we have with it is that the elevator is super slow. We stayed for 2 nights and only used the elevator when transporting luggages to and from the room, because the wait is like ridiculous...

Thank you for your review of The Grand Central Hotel.

It was wonderful to hear that you tried your first ever Haggis - and even better that you enjoyed it. We will be sure to have plenty in stock next time you are back in Glasgow.

Your comments on our elevators are greatly appreciated, as this is something our guests rarely comment on.
The hotel plan to reinstate a third elevator later in the year, to reduce waiting at peak times.

We booked a Saturday night here as it was convenient for the station and the city centre. Although its very modern it hasn't lost its old world charm. The champagne bar is very lively and the cocktails are excellent. We booked a room and upgraded to bring your partner. On arrival the room had a bottle of wine and Belgium chocolate strawberries waiting for us. A really nice touch. Breakfast was served downstairs a bit of a trek but it was nice. We had a very enjoyable stay here
