“Perfect stay at Blythswood”
Reviewed May 3, 2011

We stayed here for 5 nights in April. We came to Glasgow to see the football and do some sightseeing. The hotel was perfect. Excellent relatively quiet location, just a 10 minute stroll to the shops and restaurants. The staff went out of their way to look after us and knew by name. We will definitely return and I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Great location, very good bar service, dark decor in rooms. Rooms facing the street are noisy. Good food. Free pool after 1800.

I have to say, it was a fantastic night. For only £110 I had a room that other hotels would charge triple for, the food and the service were fantastic, as was the spa. This is a truly great hotel, and breathtakingly cheap for what you get.

Stayed for four nights Mon-Fri with my teenage daughter for a mother-daughter 'girlie' getaway. Great location in Glasgow, close to shops and amenities. We were welcomed and shown to our room by the very helpful concierge Michael - we felt the room was a bit noisy and too near an outdoor fan system, so we asked to change room as we planned to spend quite a bit of time in the room relaxing . This was done immediately, pleasantly and without fuss, and the alternative first room we saw (they offered to show us another 3) was perfect. The room was a good size, with a nice seating area and the sizeable TV could be viewed from the bath - a big plus on a relaxing break!! The room was indeed dark, as a previous reviewer commented - the windows are small and lighting subdued, but we actually liked that and found it therapeutic. The bathroom was lovely - all marble and nice lighting, and we had plenty of hot water for showers and baths when we stayed.

Breakfast every morning was plentiful and fresh. A buffet system was available for breads, cold meats, cheeses, juices and cereals etc - small amounts of everything replaced regularly rather than heaps of stuff sitting out, which was great. Hot food was cooked to order and brought to the table. The poached eggs were great, as were the potato scones. Breakfast closes at 10.00 - as lazy leisure travellers sleeping late another half hour might have been good but staff did warn that the buffet was closing and gave ample opportunity for us to get anything we required before actual closing.

The spa is incredible - the thermal experience is fantasic and one of the best I have been to. We had facials and tried the Rhassoul mud experience - really good - and all the staff and therapists at the spa were helpful and friendly. We also had afternoon tea which was delicious and plentiful (took mst of it away in a box!).

The best thing in my view about this hotel is the staff - reception, restaurant and spa. They are friendly and helpful with great local knowledge, and seem genuinely committed to good customer service. We got a bit lost one day in the hotel and a man painting the corridor took us to (note - took us, didn't just tell us) where we were trying to go. All staff, from check in to check out are what made this trip for us - and a 5 star hotel building isn't a 5 star hotel without a 5 star staff - Blythwood Square has it all.

All positive? Pretty much, if I had to find any fault to balance things in this review it would be that I'm quite old fashioned in that I don't like making my own toast at hotel breakfast (just a pet hate.....I hate all the standing around with the tongs and trying to get it out of the grill thing without dropping it or taking someone else's by mistake.....) and the coffee at breakfast was a bit gritty and grim each day - had tea on the last morning. Also - the room service menu is a bit limited, but I believe that is about to be redrafted.

So in summary, a beautiful elegant hotel with lovely public rooms and bedrooms, fresh food, an outstanding spa - but best of all, a great staff.

Slightly disappointing stay. A few issues over the course of our 2 night stay led us to the conclude that standards here have slipped:

- charging £25 a day for valet parking but no-one available to park car on arrival resulting in guests having to pay for meter parking until a concierge becomes available
- general lack of staff at reception at time of arrival
- restaurant and bar staff badly managed - no continuity of service (at breakfast and dinner). This resulted in us being asked the same questions several times by different member of staff, each course was ordered from/brought by a different member of staff, our glasses of bottled water were topped up with tap water (whilst still half full of bottled water) and we were also brought the wrong bottle of wine 3 times. Chips were cold and soggy.
- showers cut out intermittently/wouldn't start/were restricted temperature
- reception ask on arrival whether guests require a turn down service in the evening. we said that we did and it was noted accordingly but the service never appeared.

None of these are major issues, but they are not characteristic of a 5 star hotel. There is plenty of style at this property but not much substance unfortunately. Fine if you get a deal (and eat elsewhere) but not one for the hitlist. The issues were perhaps magnified by the fact that the night before we arrived at Blythswood Square we had been staying at Cameron House which was excellent on all fronts.
