My first experience of North Star was for a recent, private party - and one can fail to be impressed. It's a small, long thin, space which might take about 30 people maximum. Maurizio the chef owner, and partner, Esther, front of house, just know how to host. The food was delicious - and we were fortunate to have a four course dinner - the main courses included lamb and a fabulous seabass dish. So, the cafe is more a lunchtime/ day time event but if you follow North Star on Facebook, there are dinner evenings open to all but you have to book speedily as word gets round quickly and tables reserved! This is authentic Italian food at its best, lovingly prepared . It has the feel of being in someone's home. Go try and enjoy!

North Star Cafe put on a fantastic dinner party for myself and 20 friends for my 50th birthday.

Chef Maurizio designed this menu to fit our budget of £33 per person (byo).

Home made nibbles on arrival (garlic bread and pastries)

Mixed antipasti to start - about six different things for each person, more than was needed considering how much was still to come!

Primo piatto of 3 large hand made ravioli filled aubergine and cheese that had everyone raving about it.

The main course was a choice between
- steamed seabass with prawns and shellfish, which I had and it was amazing.
or
- grilled and crumbed rack of lamb - went down very well with all the meat eaters.
or
- flan of seasonal vegetables - an unusual and delicious Italian dish for the vegetarians. (Who elsewhere would have to content themselves with penne arrabiata or risotto funghi!)

Dessert was an extraordinary birthday cake decorated with sculpted fresh fruit - truly a wonder to behold and a joy to eat!

Coffee to finish.

The service was friendly, as always, and our friends from outside the area will be forever jealous that we have this gem of a cafe on our doorstep here in Queen Margaret Drive.

Fantastic Italian food, you're always safe if you choose one of the specials. Everything is home made, so the service isn't super quick, 15 to 20 minutes wait for a main meal? It's worth it though. The staff are lovely, completely accommodating and friendly.
The café itself is small and narrow, get ready to squeeze in where you can, don't expect bags of room, but it's not so small that you can't have a private conversation and relax.
Mostly, I wish they did a cookbook, the flavours they get into dishes is like some sort of magic.
It'll take you less than ten minutes to walk here from the top of Byres road and it's not difficult to find. The walk over the bridge on Queen Margaret drive is nice too.
