Revisited with happy memories after many years absence since earlier heydays. So not sure what to expect. Still generally very good on service, food and drinks. Seems to have achieved a good balance in avoiding stratospheric prices whilst still providing good quality, enjoyable and authentic food. Would have to agree with other comments that it’s fairly crowded venue – with some tables it could be a problem unless you're very neighborly and sociable types. It was, nevertheless a hearty, fun, but not raucous ambiance.
All our varied dishes (cheese excepted) were faultless in quality, portions, temperature and presentation. Wine decently priced for decent quality; a welcome expectation in today’s restaurant scene
I’d have to mention the one disappointment, the cheese; if only because by that point a consistent high standard and expectation had been set. Three thin slices of not especially impressive cheeses on a platter of biscuits and a mass of greenery for 6 quid were a letdown. The barely-touched platter did not prompt any query when being cleared – only lapse in otherwise excellent service. Did not want to spoil our special occasion, so after paying I discreetly mentioned to the staff the let-down. They were profuse with apologies and wished we had brought it up during the meal.
We will definitely be returning with previous good memories still reasonably intact.
