“A phenominal place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2008

An exceptional hotel with the best staff you could hope for. Nothing is too much trouble. We stayed in a Deluxe suite which was nothing short of luxury - lounge, wet room, 2 plasma TVs, and a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting for us after we visited the new spa. Absolutely super, if you're wanting a romantic treat away there is nothing finer than Fairmont, St Andrews.

Stayed here with a large family group for a long weekend.
First impressions of the hotel were superb and it was the same the whole weekend.

Out of the six rooms booked, there was a bit of a mix up with the extra beds and cot in the family rooms. It never really was sorted out. However, when paying the bill the manager never charged us for the champagne reception that we organised. This was really appreciated and a bit of a surprise. Nice touch

We ate in the hotel and the food was really good and plenty for the kids to eat, and the breakfast was brilliant.
All the staff were very friendly and very thorough at their job.

The golf was good and the second course is being restructured at the moment. A few of the group hired clubs and they were to a very high standard. Just what you would expect from this standard of hotel.

We made use of the swimming pool, only down side was that it was very busy and the changing rooms were being refurbished and you had to change in a Porto cabin which was very cold. Therefore, the kids decided to walk back to the rooms wearing the dressing gowns provided. None of the staff said anything about this so that was fine.

The only down side is the price of the drinks, for as busy as the hotel was the bars were always empty.

Management, drop the price of the drinks and there will be lots more people using the bars and this can only increase the atmosphere of the hotel.

All in all we all hade a great stay at the Fairmont Hotel and I would definitely recommend it.

I stayed at Fairmont St. Andrews for two nights in June 08 on business, as my company was producing a staff conference which took over a large part of their (huge) conferencing area. On the business side, I struggle to find anything to criticise. The fabric of the hotel was uniformly clean, well-maintained and modern. The attention to detail was excellent, and the staff were, by and large, superb - helpful, courteous and efficient. Interesting to note that many of the staff I came into contact with appeared to be from eastern Europe, and displayed a professionalism that was beginning to vanish from British hospitality. Perhaps the influx of workers from the new Europe will teach us what we had forgotten? As a guest I had much the same experience; my room was comfortable, modern and spotless, the meals were all fantastic and the service exemplary. Aha! I've thought of something to moan about - the range of drinks in the bar. Great if you only want to drink whisky or wine, but if you fancy a beer you'd better take the free shuttle service into the town. I know Scotland doesn't have a particularly illustrious brewing heritage, but come on - not a single real ale or Czech lager? No Newcastle Brown? Not even a pint o' heavy?? Disappointing for a hotel that impresses so comprehensively in every other respect. Ah well, you'd never discover the delights of St. Andrews if everything was perfect...

I have not a bad word to say about it.

The rooms were lovely, staff friendly and helpful. Worth every penny!

I took my mum here for a 60th birthday treat and we both had a really relaxing stay. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and courteous, reminiscent of American style service where everyone asks how you are and generally makes an effort to be pleasant.

We had a double double room which was very spacious and there are good size bathrooms with powerful showers and under floor heating.

I would concur with another reviewer that the hotel is a bit lacking in atmosphere due to its size and lack of guests mid week. The atrium restaurant is nice and light for breakfast, but in the evening is too big to feel cosy or comfortable. We opted to dine in our room rather than sitting in a vast, empty restaurant. Only other complaints are the air conditioning (not often needed in Scotland and all the public spaces were freezing) and the lack of vegetarian choices on the menus. Ironically, the room service menu was the most enticing for 2 vegetarians which was a bit disappointing.

Only other thing to watch out for is the courtesy bus which leaves the appointed pick up spot in St Andrews 5-10 minutes too early so if you're not there in good time they'll go without you!

We stayed midweek in March for a relaxing break. Booked a deluxe room but were disappointed with the standard of the room - would not class as deluxe. The main areas of the hotel were lovely and staff were very helpful.Breakfast was a big disappointment, all the hot dishes were lukewarm and the selection was not as extensive as could have been for five star. We booked spa treatments which were lovely and well worth the price tag. Overall not as good as expected, certainly didn't feel like a special break.

  • Liked — Lovely communal areas and great spa treatments
  • Disliked — Poor standard of room and terrible breakfast

We found the outside of the hotel somewhat disappointing. The grounds appeared to be in the process of extensive redesigning using diggers and the hotel is somewhat standard looking.

The entrance was however very grand with a fire and a huge portrait. We had prejoined the presidents club, and despite getting a very cheap rate they still treated us royally at reception and had our room details ready.

The room itself was spacious and well stocked with high quality toiletries and bath robes. Having stayed in Fairmonts in Canada we were expecting it to have a bit more individuality but it was decorated in bland neutral colours which most UK hotels seem to opt for.

We decided to "relax" in the spa.Now we knew it was being renovated, and we knew that the changing rooms would be a portacabin, but it was all so grim. We had to get their via the fire stairs which looked like they had never been decorated, access the pool via the gym and a singularly unfriendly attendant. The portacabin was cold and dingy and the door kept flying open so anyone walking past could see you getting changed. There was no water dispenser at the pool, so I had to go back to the gym to get a glass of water. I guess the price reflected this, but if I had paid full price for my room I would be very upset by the low standards.

We had planned to take the free shuttle bus into town, but hadn't realised that the hotel was a good 2 miles from the city centre so decided to eat in one of the hotel restaurants Esperante instead. I was amazed by the quality of the food. It isn't cheap but if you enjoy fine dining then I would recommend it. Word of warning though, don't go too hungry as the portions are small.

Our kingsize bed was comfortable and the shower was strong. Breakfast is amazing. A wonderful choice of hot and cold food, I loved the bircher muesli.

So overall for the price we paid it was a great experience, but just not up to the standard of the Fairmonts abroad.

Oh and parents take note, we went sans munchkin but there is a kids club from aged 2 up and there were a lot of families there.
